In Part 1, in the āObey Godā Series, I mentioned there are 11 times in the New Testament we are told to obey the Government and/or those in authority over us, but there is only one single time where it is says āWe must obey God not man.ā Itās important to understand the context of this statement, so you may want to go back and read Part I first.
Most people recognize things in this county, and even the world, are not going in a positive direction. Some even say things are so bad that they have never seen such evil. People are asking why? Why is there so much evil?

With all this bad news, many people, even those in the media, are saying there is a spiritual element to the evil we see today.Ā Ā Ā Although they attribute what we are experiencing to negative spiritual influences (e.g., the guy sitting on your left shoulder), they do not take the most logical next step to suggest a spiritual solution. Evil does have a source, so we must combat it appropriately. donāt go to a gun fight with a knife.
We are fighting a spiritual battle, and we need to fight back with our single most powerful weapon, our spiritual weapon. Letās review what military equipment, the Armor of the Lord, we have at our disposal. This armor enables us to stand against the devil. Itās all listed in Chapter 6 of Ephesians:
- The Belt of Truth
- The Breastplate of Righteousness
- The Boots of Readiness
- The Shield of Faith
- The Helmet of Salvation[1]

Notice something about this list so far? ONLY defensive equipment is mentioned. So far, not a single offensive weapon is listed. Forget about going to a gun fight with a knife, this is like going to a gun fight with only cowboy boots!
When Jesus was speaking to Peter, he said how He was going to build His church and the gates of hell would not stand against it.[2]

Picture this, the Jewish army in the Old Testament is standing in a field completely ready for battle. They have their armour, their swords, spears, etc. They think they have everything they need to win the battle. Then, they see the Philistines coming across the field to attack. Suddenly fear is struck in the hearts of all the Jewish warriors when they see what the Philistines have, and they scream, āRUN, They Got Gates!ā
No, that never happened because gates are a defensive not offensive weapon. No soldier would carry a gate into battle on the attack. Well, no sane one at least. The Gates of Hell will not withstand the offensive weapon the Church has at its disposal. This implies the weapon we have is more powerful than any weapon our enemy has. And exactly what is that one and only offensive weapon mention in Chapter six of Ephesians?
It is the sword, the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Our only offensive weapon that the gates of hell will not withstand, is the Word of God. This is our most powerful weapon of mass destruction. This is how we battle evil spirits that are the rulers of this world. In fact, the Bible tells us our enemy is never people, itās always the evil that influences and controls them. They are called āEvil authorities and powers, rulers of darkness, spiritually wicked. And they are in positions of control.[3] So we must fight spirit with spirit.
There is a theme here, the only time Christians say they must obey God, not man, is when they are told not speak to the Word of God; AND the only offensive weapon we have at our disposal is the Word of God. This is important. And, at the end of the list of battle equipment it says we have these tools so that we may boldly speak about the Gospel.
Itās time to recognize we need to bring a spiritual weapon to a spiritual battle. Itās time for churches to take this spiritual weapon OUTSIDE of the four walls of the church into the culture.
I will continue on this topic in the future to expand upon it. During Christmas we celebrate the birth of a savior that brought good news (and power) to the world. Itās about time we use this power.

[1] Ephesians 6:11-20 (KJV) 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devilā¦14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; 19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
[2] Matthew 16:18ā¦upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
[3] Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
