And my parents would always say they would never DO it, but supported others to have the right to it.

Tina Peters "prevented" Smartmatic or Dominion scrubbing the hard drive/s by imaging the HDD and keeping a copy. They (Dominion et al) still scrubbed, or should I use the term erased election data that should not have been erased after she had made the copy/image of the HDD/s.
Her crime, from the little I know, was that she showed that information to the general public. I believe at Lindell's Cyber Convention, which was then broadcasted to the whole world. I know, as I watched it and I don't even live in the US. To be frank I couldn't make head or tail of that data anyway, they had it up on a screen while someone was going through the files.. It wasn't a Eureka moment at all.
The judge put her away for showing that data. Not her showing the data, but the fact she gave people at the Cyber Convention the data who then as mentioned showed it to all and sundry.
Had Tina kept the data within "chambers" as such I don't think anything would have happened to her in the short term. They would have worked her out; she would have been cut off and worked out of her position as she would have been deemed a loose cannon.

The way that her charges were set up made it so that it didn't matter if her claims of election manipulation were true or not. The argument wasn't that it was illegal for her herself to investigate the election data, but that it's simply illegal to steal another coworker's security credentials and give them to an unauthorized person. That's why her attempts to include any election data in the trial were denied, as it was legally irrelevant if the election was interfered with or not in this particular case.
