Former Tar Heels coaching great, Roy Williams, and Verizon have joined together to pay off $10 million in debt for the victims of Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina.
Roy Williams was a great men’s basketball coach at Kansas and North Carolina. He teamed up with Verizon to pay off $10 million in Helene victims’ debt.
Legendary North Carolina Tar Heels basketball coach Roy Williams and Verizon teamed up to help erase $10 million in consumer debt for western North Carolina families impacted by Hurricane Helene.
Verizon called on Williams to directly contact families still dealing with Helene’s devastation to share the news that their debt would be relieved. The random act of kindness model was enabled by Verizon’s partnership with ForgiveCo, which also worked with the wireless provider to clear debt for military veterans through its partnership with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

One of the recipients, Timothy Luker, was a patient at Mission Hospital when the storm hit.
He spent a week at the hospital and sadly his home flooded.
Luker said that he is humbled and he NEVER thought a corporation would have come through for him in this way.
