Women Should Be Silent in Church – Part 4 of the Bad Bible Verses and Sayings Series

Note: This Point Is Covered In Detail In the JesusGospel.com Book

There are no bad Bible verses, but there are verses and sayings attributed to God that are not Biblical. It’s not the verse that’s bad, it’s the use and interpretation of a verse or a saying which has come to mean the opposite of God’s intent.

Women should keep silent in the church, and God forbid, don’t let them be teachers or Pastors! Basically, many believe women should be silent in church matters and just let us men run everything. Not a bad deal if you a male. Through the centuries and especially today, this issue has been debated by many notable scholars who disagree on the role of women in the Church.  Most theologians today believe women should not be Pastors.  Is this what a loving God wants?

WOMEN LEADERS IN THE CHURCH

Before we even stary to look at this issue, here are five clear examples (there are others) of female leaders in the Bible:

  1. Deborah was a judge, prophet, and military leader (Judges Ch 4-5)
  2. Miriam led the people of Israel in worship after they crossed the Red Sea (Exodus 15:20); and listed as a leader of the nation along with Moses and Aron (Micah 6:4).
  3. Anna was a prophetess that gave thanks to the Lord during Jesus’ circumcision, and prophesied all would look to Him for redemption (Luke 2:38)
  4. Mary Magdalene was the first-person Jesus choose to appear to after his resurrection (John 20:14).
  5. Priscilla and her husband Aquila led a church in their home and were leaders in the area. They raised up other leaders and helped them understand the Scriptures more correctly. (Acts 18:18-28). Priscilla was a teacher and was listed BEFORE her husband in the Bible most times.  (Acts 18:18, 26; Romans 16:3).  This was very unusual in that culture. This indicates she was the leader of the two.

The beliefs about the restrictive roles of women in the church can be basically traced to these three collection of verses we will evaluate separately.

  1. Be Silent – 1 Corinthians 14:34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
  2. Man is the Head of the Woman – 1 Corinthians 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
  3. Women Should Not Teach – 1 Timothy 2:11-12 Let the women learn in silence with all subjection. 12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.[1]

WOMEN, BE SILENT

The context of this verse is clear, and many scholars agree the specific instruction is directed ONLY to the wives of the prophets, NOT to all women. It appears, at that time, Men would prophesy in a church meeting, and some of their wives would question or expound on what their husband said. The directive to “keep silent in the church”  is specifically directed wives of the Prophets. In the verses immediately before, it says:

1 Corinthians 14:32-33 (KJV) 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

This is directed only to the wives of the prophets. Is also says in Verse 35 that they women should ask their husbands at home. What about the single women, it does not specify if they should also be silent.

A loving God allows women to speak in the church and to prophesy. See the listed items A, B, and C, above where women are listed as worshipers and prophets. In Joel Chapter 2, God says He will pour out his Spirit on ALL flesh: “Your sons and daughters will prophesy” (verse 28). How could they possible do this if they are to be silent in the church?

MAN IS THE HEAD OF THE WOMEN

Verse #2 above says man is the head of the woman as Jesus is the head of the man. Many people misunderstand the meaning of this verse and believe men are the bosses of women and need to subordinate them. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. Let’s evaluate man’s relationship to Jesus and how this relates to their relationship to their wives (the context of this verse is the relationship between husband and wife).

Does Jesus ever boss us men around? Does he ever tell us to “Take out the garbage,” or “Get me a beer?” Does He ever say, “I’m the Boss!” Does he treat us men as His subjects?  NO! The man’s relationship with Jesus is to look to Him to help us. Men give Jesus our problems to solve and a wife gives her problems to the husband to solve, with love..  It’s a partnership with each having different, but equal roles.

This does not mean she should not pray; it just means she has someone there to help her. Of course, a wife can also help her husband. In the past it has primarily been the man’s role to provide for the family, so in this way a woman would look to the husband for the things she needs, just as the man looks to Jesus for the things he needs.

1 Thessalonians 2:10-11 (NIV) 10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. 11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,

WOMEN SHOULD NOT TEACH

#image_title

This is a complicated verse, and many theologians disagree on its meaning, in fact this is one of the most debated verses of the day:

1 Timothy 2:11-12 (NIV) 11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.

Again, the context here is husband and wife and it encourages women to learn. Remember, this was discouraged in the culture of the day as only men were permitted to attend the Jewish schools of the day. This was a positive thing for women as they were now encouraged to learn.[2]   Also, the word submission could really be “not to cause a disturbance.”  This relates to the first item above about women speaking out of turn during a church service and to ask their husbands at home.

Some scholars believe this verse is saying a woman did not come before a man. Greek and other pagan believes of that day (also today) believed God was a woman and that women were created before men.  This verse is correcting that and warning people not to fall into false beliefs. Adam (man) came before Eve (woman). Others simply believe women should learn about Jesus and the Bible on their own time at home, not to use the time in the church as their classroom. A worship service is not a learning time. It is disruptive to people to be asking questions and during a service.

GOD LOVES WOMEN

God loves women and he loves the family. He loves children as they are called a blessing.  Men and women should not be battling one another for leadership in a married, but should, with love, define their roles as each of them feels comfortable. The culture today is encouraging women to battle and fight against men for control. This is not God’s will. Marriage  It’s a partnership with husband, wife, and Jesus!
