Report #32 – The UnderDog Says:

Often people are struggling to get ahead, looking for the next big thing in their life. A new car, a wife or husband, a new job, a raise, a house, a great vacation.  The list goes on and on. When we are  looking for something at the expense of other things, it’s called “striving.”

To strive means “to battle, to fight, to wrestle.”  Too often we are fighting, battling, or wrestling with things we don’t need to. We sometimes do this at the expense of those things in our life that are the most important. Our family and our friends, the ones we love.

Here is a short Parable:

There was a woman walking along a path and she saw a man she knew on the side frantically looking for something. She asked him what he was looking for and he told her.  Due to her familiarity with the area, she mentioned what he was looking for could not be found here and the things he already had, were more valuable than what he was seeking. The man replied, “I am compelled to keep looking, and I believe that in time, I will find it. The things I have will still be there when I am finished.” The woman left and knew he would not find what he was looking for, and she could not convince him otherwise. She also knew the man did not realize he was risking the things he already had, to find the things that were not there.

There is an old song with this one verse:

“Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone.”[1]

We all frequently risk the things we have and CRAVE (strive) for something else. This many times causes ruin and destruction in people’s lives, their marriage, in many different areas:

1 Timothy 6:9-10 ESV But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Developing an “attitude of gratitude” takes effort and time. We all have ‘thought habits’ not easy to change, and the next big thing that comes along many times looks so enticing, it is difficult to resist, but remember:

“The Grass is only greener on the other side of the fence because the septic system is leaking!”

I’m not saying you should not try to achieve more in your life, I am simply saying practice BALANCE. It seems weird that in striving for something we don’t have, we can lose the things we already have.

Being thankful and recognizing the things you already have is a key to being blessed:

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV) 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Psalms 100:4-5 (KJV) 4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. 5 For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Colossians 3:14-15 (NIV) 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

So, stop striving and find the things you already have, you will be blessed!
