Report #38 – The UnderDog Says:

Sacrifice, Americans don’t like to talk about this, we don’t like to surrender anything we already have.  We are a country of “wanting more,” not of giving up what we already have. Some people say, “You’ll have to pry it out of my hands!!!”

In his book “Mere Christianity,” C.S. Lewis declared that all humans, during every era in history, all had the feeling someone above was displeased with us, and we should make some kind of sacrifice to earn their favor back.  The first definition of the word sacrifice in Webster’s is “an act of offering to a deity something precious, the killing of a victim on an altar.”

Animal and human sacrifices used to be popular in many cultures. Thank God we don’t do this in our country.

Another definition of this word is to surrender something to gain something else. Like in the game of chess, you might sacrifice your pawn to gain an advantage on your opponent (I don’t think chess pieces really bleed!).

Others think that forgoing eating to lose weight is a huge sacrifice. Some take this too far, like when the character Emily in “The Devil Wears Prada’s” said, “When I’m about to faint, I eat a cube of cheese.” Now that is sacrifice.

And of course, when times get seriously dangerous, people talk about the ultimate sacrifice, giving up your life for your country.

Last week we covered being happy and the things that keep us from it, in “The Desires that battle within us.Last week’s article discussed sacrificing something that ultimately benefits us.  A pawn for a king.

The word “Sacrifice” occurs 205 times in the Bible, “Praise” 216 times, and “Love” 230 times.  This gives you an idea of what is most important in God’s eyes.  The purpose of animal sacrifice in the Old Testament was NOT to win God’s favor.

God required an animal sacrifice to provide a temporary covering of sins and to foretell the perfect and complete sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Animal sacrifice is an important theme throughout Scripture because “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Hebrews 9:22).[1] This shedding of blood in the Bible is a complicated issue that will be covered next week.

But for now, I want to talk about a happy sacrifice, a sacrifice you and anyone would be more than willing to make. I want you all to consider sacrificing the following things, your

These are all worthwhile sacrifices. Wouldn’t it be great to figuratively, put all these things on an imaginary alter, to let go of them in a fire of praise?  That is correct, praise, but more on that later.

There once was a well-off man with family. He had a good job with a good income, but he greatly desired more, and these desires battled within him.  His neighbor had a better car and house, his boss and others also. He  decided he was going to sacrifice all so he could get more (think about that).  But as he made this decision his wife asked him, “Why don’t you examine closely the lives of both those above and below you, before you make such a change.” The man thought this was a good idea. He planned a few dinners with those that worked for him, and those not as well off in his town. He realized he had many things these people did not have.  A few of them seemed blessed with what they had; while others were like him, striving, battling, like he was.  He was also able to have dinner with his boss at his large home. His boss had many things he did not have, but he also noticed he was not close to his children and his relationship with his wife was strained. His boss also greatly desired to have the things others had that he did not. In the end, he concluded those who were content and not battling with desires, were much better off than those who were not content and raged with desires. He also realized he could still work hard for improvements in his life, but he would not have to sacrifice the things he already had to achieve them. The desires that battled within him became the contentment of a life well lived.

When you grasp for more, what you have slips between your fingers; and the grass is greener on the other side of the fence when the septic system leaks!

And there is one more thing I suggest you sacrifice, praise to God through Jesus. It is a sacrifice since we give up our time and our comfort (admit it, it sometimes is uncomfortable to praise God) to praise him. So, be unconformable and be blessed in the process and give God a sacrifice of praise.

Hebrews 13:15 (NIV) Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.

One thing I tell people when they say they are unhappy is they should help someone else.  Helping others will help you, give and you will receive. The Bible supports this in the very next verse:

Hebrews 13:16 (NIV) And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

As you help others, the desires that battle within you, your fears, and your insecurities are replaced a with a true state of being blessed. As we praise God, God is pleased, but He really does not need anything, He tells us, as soon as we are blessed, we are to give to and bless others. The good we have we give to others, and instead of this reducing our blessings, it increases and multiplies it!

And lastly, let’s not forgot Jesus Christ, who sacrificed His shame and His life so we can live in eternity with Him:

Hebrews 12:2 (KJV) 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

It’s time to sacrifice the things holding you back. Pray to God and ask others about your true desires and the ones needing to be sacrificed so your life will improve. Think of the joy that is set before you and SACRIFICE THE BATTLES THAT RAGE WITHIN YOU! Praise God!
