Report #51- The UnderDog Says: IS GOD IN CONTROL?
Note: This Point Is Covered In Detail In the JesusGospel.com Book
There are no bad Bible verses, but there are verses and sayings attributed to God that are not Biblical. It’s not the verse that’s bad, it’s the use and interpretation of a verse or a saying which has come to mean the opposite of God’s intent.
This will be a difficult study for many since this saying is so widespread in Christian culture today. I am not trying to discourage you with this information, but I want to build you up in the knowledge of Jesus Christ and the Bible. The truth better than a ‘convenient’ motto.
#5. WHO IS IN CONTROL? (Click for #1 & #2) (Click for #3 & #4)
The popular saying “God in in Control” can be frequently overheard in Christian conversations and it goes something like (slightly exaggerated) this:
“Joe, how have you been?”
“Great Steve, but my wife has left me, I totaled my car, and my house burned down.”
Both Joe and Steve together say “Yes, but God is in control.”

If this is what control looks like, someone is not doing a good job. To say God is in control implies he is controlling everything, good or bad. We are not puppets for Jesus. This eliminates free will.
Some Christian take this so far to say when a young child dies, “God needed another angel in heaven.” That is horrible, and a loving God would never kill a child. Other Christians say when you read today’s news, that is exactly what God’s wanted to happen, every single detail. This is a simplistic understanding that minimizes God’s love.
SATAN HAS THE POWER OF DEATH
The only one that attaches “strings” to us in the attempt make us puppets, is Satan. The author of death is not God, but Satan. He holds the power of death:
Hebrews 2:14 (NIV) Since the children have flesh and blood, he [Jesus] too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil.
We know that sin brings death, not life:
Romans 6:23 (KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
In fact, Jesus Christ is called the “Author of eternal salvation” and the “Prince of Life.” God is the giver of all life to all. Certainly, they are not causing evil and death.
Hebrews 5:9 (ASV)…he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation;
Acts 3:14-15 (KJV) 14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer [Barabbas] to be granted unto you; 15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
Acts 17:24-25 (KJV) God that made the world and all things therein…he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
SATAN IS THE “god” OF THIS WORLD
There is no verse in the Bible that says God is in control. In fact, there are verses that say just the opposite. The Bible tells us that the “god of this world” (currently), is Satan:
2 Corinthians 4:3-4 (KJV) 3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
Christians are literally behind enemy lines as we live in a world with a god (small “g”) who is at warring with God and God’s people. This was stated back in the beginning of the Bible:
Genesis 3:15 (NIV) And I will put enmity [hatred] between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.
God tells Satan a future child will be coming. There will be hatred between God’s people and Satan, who would strike Jesus’ heal (Crucifixion). Sometime after that, Jesus will kill Satan:
Revelation 20:10 (NIV) And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur…

There is further proof of Satan’s power in Danial chapter 10, when he prayed for 21 days with no answer. An angel was trying to meet with Daniel, but was restrained by a powerful devil spirit called, “the prince of Persia.” The angel alone could not overcome this spirit until the archangel Michael came and helped him. This makes it clear there are evil spiritual powers warring against God’s will and God’s people. There is a battle between good and evil, and we should not attribute any evil caused by Satan to God.
There are verses people point to try to prove that God is in ultimate control, but they do not say that God is controlling us. The most difficult one to understand is in Matthew:
Matthew 10:29-32 (KJV) 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
These verses simply say nothing happens without the Father’s knowledge and the hairs on our head are known by Him, (And the bald guy would say, “Give me more!”). It does not state that he is “in control.”
Different Bible versions[1] end verse 29, in very different ways:
- KJV & RV “without your Father.”
- NASB & ESV “apart from your Father.”
- NLT “Without your Father knowing it.”
- NIV “without your Father’s care.”
- NKJV “Father’s will.”
- HCSB “Father’s consent”
Technically, the Greek text does not add any words after “Father” just like the KJV, RV, NASB, and ESV do not. The four other versions (#3 – #6) all add words not in the text. In fact, a parallel verse in Luke strengthens the view God is not in control, but He is all knowing.
Luke 12:6-7 (KJV) 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME
This popular saying, I agree with. God is good and just to everyone, even Satan. Satan gained his standing of “god” of this world legally from Adam, who originally had dominion over the whole earth (Genesis 1:26). Although God’s power is much greater than Satan’s, God “plays by the rules.” It will be Jesus Christ who will destroy Satan at a future time (foretold in Genesis). This is God’s plan.
Satan is in a battle for the souls of those who live on earth (including you), and he is against anything Godly or Biblical. He perverts the meaning of the Bible with convenient sayings to confuse people. He subtlety obscures the truth to the point people deny Jesus Christ and the true God. God wants to save you and He sent His only Son to die for all of us that have sinned.
God does intervein for us as we see many times in the Bible and many Christians will also attest to this. This is why Christians should fervently be praying to God to come help us as we are behind enemy lines
GOD IS NOT AWFUL
Remember, there is no such thing as “God awful.” Satan is what make things that way, but we know that “GOD IS WONDERFUL!”
