Report #35 – The UnderDog Says:

Let’s start off with a story.

This a story of a family with a young daughter.  She’s going on a date and a young man. He drives up to pick her up and meets her parents.  The parent’s size up the young man and are impressed.  He is confident, relaxed, and (of course) charming.  A regular Prince Charming,no wonder their daughter is dating him.

He seemed like a great choice, but they should not be so hasty. Why, because a charming person is a deceitful person. Men or women who are charming are selfish and uncaring people.  Instead of a prince or princess, they may actually be a frog! As the fairytale goes, if you kiss enough frogs to find a prince or princess, after a while, you’ll just settle on a frog.

But almost no-one these days has a negative opinion on charm. What we have here is “Failure to Communicate.”

Most people want to be charming and admire those who are, who are popular. Next week’s article will cover the topic of being popular; but for today’s purposes, being charming and popular are two valued attributes many people strive to have. In the current culture, being charming is viewed as a positive thing. One indication of the popularity of a word is the number of synonyms there are for it.  The Merriam-Webster website dictionary lists 142 synonyms for the word “charming!”[1] The only ones I see with a negative connotation are “Entrapping, Beguiling, and Witching.”  Hmm, if I am being charmed then I am being entrapped!

Being charming is so popular there is also no shortage of websites with advise on how you could become more charming.  Here is a short list:

  • Secrets On How To Be Charming
  • Interesting Habits Of Charming People
  • Skills Charming People Have
  • Genuine Ways Anyone Can Be Charming
  • Secrets Of Naturally Charming People
  • How To Be Charming

But wait, how could I have such a negative view of this word when the world seems to have just the opposite view (this also related to next week article on being a ‘Friend of the World’).

It is the Bible that tells us charm is deceptive:

Proverbs 31:30 (NIV)  Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

Using charm or beauty to trick others is not recommended, both could be used to deceive.

Charm is self-focused and draws you in and puffs up. Charm tells us lies we want to hear, not truths we need to hear. Charm can lead someone to doubt the Lord.[2]

A charming person is someone who will use their allure to mesmerize others to decide to do something they would not usually do.  The first example of charm in history is Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. This is where the snake, which was Satan, beguiled, tricked, and charmed Eve into eating the forbidden fruit:

Genesis 3:13 (NIV) Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived [beguiled, charmed] me, and I ate.”

People bribe others by using the powers of charm:

Proverbs 17:8 (NIV)  A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it; they think success will come at every turn.

As Christians, we need to strive to not do things that benefit only us, to beguile or trick others. We need to be genuine, loving, just the opposite of Satan. Just the opposite of being charming. From the Biblical perspective anyone using charm is exercising some type of power, a hidden power that goes beyond someone’s personality:

Isaiah 19:3 (KJV) And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, [sorcerers in the ESV] and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.

People using charm have a charming or seductive spirit.  However, the spirit of idols, charmers, sorcerers, wizards, and those with familiar spirits, cannot even compare to the power of the Lord. It cannot compare to the power of the Holy Spirit Christian’s have within us.

I find it interesting the first use of charm was by Satan appearing as a Snake, and the only animal I am aware of that can be put under a spell with a ‘charming spirit” is a snake. It’s as if God is saying, a snake was used to charm mankind, so man is now able to charm a snake.

The point here is to love God and love others. Don’t depend on a personality ‘trick’ to get ahead. Don’t listen to the world’s advice how to get ahead.  Keep in mind, in the future we will be living in with the Lord. We should invest the gifts God has given to bless and save others in this world so we can be blessed in the eternity to come!

My Secret is out, “Autopsy of a Fairly Tail” is now on Audible, (Pre-order Here).

What if Beast wasn’t a prince cursed to be a monster? What if he was a morally grey millionaire?

What if he was the main suspect in a murder mystery?

What if Beauty was the detective?

Eamon Stone is as dangerous as he is handsome, and Bel can’t shake the feeling there’s more to his presence in Bajka than meets the eye. Something about him is familiar, and while she knows he’s a threat, she can’t fight his pull. Like a moth to flame, she’s drawn to the man stalking her, to the only murder suspect they have. Bel fears he craves her blood as much as she craves his presence. She fears he is the evil hunting this town…the beast hunting her.

Loosely inspired by Beauty and the Beast, Autopsy of a Fairytale is a crime series romantic suspense perfect for those who like shadowy fairytales, murder mystery procedurals, romance, found family, and a hint of fantasy. Each of the 4 books series will be available on Audible and are based on a different fairytale, but Bel (and her Beast) will connect them all, her story ending on cliffhangers in each book. (Pre-Order).
