Report #50- The UnderDog Says:

WHO CAN COUNT TO THREE?

Note: This point is covered in detail in my book the JesusGospel.com

There are no bad Bible verses, but there are several verses and sayings (attributed to God) in modern day culture that are just wrong. It’s not the verse that is bad, it’s the use and interpretation of that verse or saying which has come to mean the opposite of God’s intent.

Why is this important? The Bible tells to meet with God’s approval, we need to handle the Bible and the words in the Bible diligently and accurately.[1] Let the Bible interpret itself. If a person can be fooled on a simple matter, they are open to being misled on more important matters.

With this background, let us review some of these “bad verses and sayings” (More Next Week).

  1. CAN YOU COUNT TO THREE? (Click Here for #1 & #2)

Can people really count to 3? That sounds like a silly question, but there is one instance where it just seems many just can’t get to that number.

Some background first. I love Biblical holidays days. I love Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, and others. I don’t get all worked up whether it was the real day in Christian history or if it was a pagan day turned into Christian holiday. Over 40 years  ago, when I was a Catholic, I took the day off and spent 6 hours in prayer on Good Friday, when I found out that Jesus was on the Cross for six hours from 9AM to 3PM. God would not condemn me for praying on the wrong day!

If I can convince you, however, of something that’s not possible, it would be easier to  convince you of other things. It’s important for Christians to have real answers to people’s questions, especially to those who don’t understand the Bible. Who knows how many people have discounted the Bible when they discover Christian’s cannot count to three. What should be your response when someone asks you “How can you get three days from Good Friday to Sunday morning?”

The crux to the question is how long was Jesus Christ dead and how long was He buried? Most people say He was dead for 3 days, which is true.

Mark 8:31 (NIV) He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.

So, it is established, Jesus was dead for 3 days. Many Christian leaders say this verse is figurative, saying it does not mean what it says. This is a scary way of thinking since, who is to decide what is figurative and what is literal? What if someone told you that Jesus Christ’s resurrection was just a figure of speech. We must be honest when we approach the Bible since God is its author. God knows what three days and three nights is. Let not assume God can’t add.

Many say, Jesus Christ died on Good Friday (I don’t know why they call it Good Friday), but He died at the 9th hour, which is 3 PM by modern reckoning.

Mark 15:34, 37(KJV) 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?…37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

How do we get three days from Friday to Sunday morning? Let’s do it together: Friday at 3 PM  until Saturday at 3 PM, is one day; but Easter Sunday morning is just 3/4 of a  day later, so that is only 1 ¾ days from Good Friday to Sunday morning. We just can’t seem to count to three!

But how long was Jesus’ buried for? It took at about 3-4 hours to take Christ off the cross and for Nicodemus and Joseph to prepare His body for burial. By Jewish tradition, Jesus would have had to be buried before sundown. It specifically says Jesus was DEAD and BURIED for 3 days and 3 nights. He then had to be dead for longer than that:

Matthew 12:39-40 (NIV) 39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Since it took 3-4 hours to bury Jesus and He was buried for three days and nights, this makes it more impossible to fit this from Friday to Sunday. In fact, three days, and three nights, from Friday at  7PM would  be sundown on Monday 7PM, or by Jewish reckoning, Tuesday Morning (Remember, the Jewish day starts at sundown, not at midnight like ours does.)

In my book, the JesusGospel.com this is clearly explained. Jesus died on the preparation day for the Passover, which would have been Wednesday at 3 PM, and then he rose on Sunday morning (by Jewish reckoning). The Jewish morning began at sunset so it could have been any time after sunset on Saturday, which was the start of the new day.

Note: This Point is Covered in Detail in my Book The JesusGospel.com

Now you count to three (smile). Does this mean you should not celebrate Good Friday and Easter (Resurrection Sunday)? No, feel free to worship and enjoy these day, God looks at your heart. Now, when someone asks you, “How do you get three days and three nights from Good Friday to Easter Sunday?” You now will not be dumbfounded since you have the answer.

  1. JONAH DIED IN THE FISH

Here is an extra tidbit for you. Since Mat. 12:40 says Jesus was just like Jonah (A ‘type of Christ’), and we have established Jesus was dead, then we now know Johan also had to be dead. Johan was an example of the Messiah that would come, that is why Jesus said Johan was a sign to the Jewish people, He meant just like Johan, He would die and be resurrected. Johan is an example of Christ. If Johan never died, what would that “sign” be? That he held his breath for three days? This does not point to Christ. Many Christians believe Johan was alive and praying the whole time he was swallowed by the fish, but this is not what Jesus was saying.

Most people can hold their breath for about one minute, while some can hold their breath for up to four minutes. Jonah’s prayer in Jonah 2:2-9 takes about one minute to say; however, no one can hold their breath for three days and nights.

Here are some ways the sign of Jonah is like Jesus Christ. Jonah, like Jesus:

  1. Was dead and “buried” for 3 days and 3 nights (Jonah 1:17)
  2. Willing gave up his life (Asked to be thrown into the sea during the storm, Jonah 1:12)
  3. Knew he would die (Jonah 2:7)
  4. Died alone without friends (Jonah 1:15, Mt. 26:56)
  5. Was in distress, as Jesus was in the garden (Jonah 2:2)
  6. Was a willing sacrifice offered to save others (Jonah 1:16)
  7. Trusted in God that he would be resurrected (Jonah 2:4)
  8. Was resurrected (Jonah 2:10)
  9. Brought many to God after his resurrection (Jonah 3:1-5)

We can now see how Jonah was a sign to us that Jesus is Lord and Messiah and we do not have to make up “nice stories” when the Bible is clear with the truth. Jonah did not hold his breath for three days and nights, he died in the fish AFTER he prayed and was then resurrected.

Next week we will continue this theme with answers to questions like and “Where we should lift our eyes up to?”
