Report #49- The UnderDog Says:

BAD BIBLE VERSES AND BAD SAYINGS (Part 1)

O.K., I must admit, there really are no bad Bible verses, sorry about that. There are, however, several verses and sayings in modern day culture that are blatantly wrong. It’s not the verse that is bad, it’s the use and interpretation of that verse which has come to mean the opposite of its intended meaning.

Why is this important? The second book of Timothy tells us to avoid arguing about our opinions regarding the words in the Bible. To meet with God’s approval, we need to handle the Bible and the words in the Bible diligently and accurately.[1] If a person can be fooled on a simple matter, they are open to being fooled and misled on many matters. We are talking about eternal life here, and that is an important thing to know about.

There are people who believe they understand God’s Word with relatively little study, and this sometimes leads people astray. There are many examples of this. One of the worst is when Jim Jones murdered over 900 of his followers by having them drink poisoned Kool-Aid. We all need to understand the true meanings of the Bible so we can’t be fooled by those who seek to promote or enrich themselves and harm others in the process.

With this background, let us review some of these “bad verses” and “bad sayings” (More Next Wek).

  1. THOU SHALT NOT KILL?

It says in the KJV Old Testament Sixth Commandment “We should not kill.”[2] But what does this really mean, does it rule out all killing? The answer is no, only unlawful killing, or murder is prohibited by God.[3] In fact,  the nine Bible versions in the footnote correctly translated this verse as “You should not murder.”[4] This is made clear in the very next chapter of Exodus where is says that anyone who strikes someone and kills them, must be put to death [by the authorities].[5] It is clear from Genesis 9:6, that God has given humans the responsibility to administer the death penalty to those who have committed murder.[6]

When someone says they don’t believe in the death penalty, killing in self-defense, or killing during war; please instruct them as to God’s true intent [although we need to be peace loving people, not warmongers]. When people say we should just leave it up to God, we need to respond in a Biblical way and let them know God has given us that responsibility. America would be a much better place if murders received the death penalty. God created it as an important way to be sure people live in safety, by having murders removed from society and by discouraging others from committing murder.[7]

  1. GOD’S WAYS ARE MYSTERIOUS TO US?

Isaiah 55:8[8] has caused considerable confusion in Christianity and for people in general. It is almost every day you hear someone say, “God’s ways are mysterious.” The verse does say God’s thoughts are not YOUR thoughts and His ways are not YOUR ways.” But who is God speaking to, who is the “YOUR” He is referring to? We don’t have to look far, the verse before Isaiah 55:8, (Verse 7) says: “Let the wicked forsake their ways and thoughts.”[9]

God is speaking to the wicked and saying His thoughts and ways are a mystery to them, but he has revealed Himself to those who seek him. How has God revealed Himself to us so that we know his ways are NOT mysterious? He has revealed Himself to mankind:

  1. Through the Bible.[10] God has committed His thoughts, instructions, commands, and examples to us in writing so we can understand Him. His ways are not a Mystery. Satan never wrote down his plans or intentions, but God has revealed His Word to us so we can love Him, so we can know His plans, so we can discern between soul and spirit, between people’s thoughts and intents. There are several great organizations that provide proof of intelligent design, not evolution, here is only one https://www.facebook.com/1mill.creationist .
  2. Through Nature, Logic, and Science. God says it is clear, with proper inspection, all things have been created was created by Him, to such the extent that people are without an excuse.[11]
  3. Through the Holy Spirit.[12] God tells us that we do not even have the ability to conceive of the good things God has prepared for us.
  4. Through others:[13] God has sent many to tell others about the salvation freely available to all through Jesus Christ.

Next week we will continue this theme with answers to questions like, “Can Christian’s add,” and where we should lift up our eyes to.

[1]  2 Timothy 2:14-17 (NASB) 14 Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. 16 But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, 17 and their talk will spread like gangrene.

[9] Isaiah 55:7 (NIV) Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them…

[10]Hebrews 4:12 (KJV) For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

[11]Romans 1:18-20 (NIV) 18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

[12] 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV) However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”—the things God has prepared for those who love him—these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.

[13] 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (KJV) 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ…

  1. This is an important point to understand. We live in a time where information is readily available. The explanations can be misinterpreted or taken out of context. It is important to understand the spoken word of God. This is where a Bible study with seasoned believers can come together and discuss what scripture and opinions on interpretation. We need each other for the exchange of views and why Jesus said when two or more are gathered I am with you. Matthew 18:19-20
