Aren’t you Happy? It seems these days, especially those that are young, the answer is no. American’s are unhappy. In fact, the USA Today, agree:

“What makes people happy? With the world’s largest economy and its highest GDP, you might think the United States would have the world’s happiest citizens, but you’d be wrong.”[1]

Yes, you would be wrong if you thought the USA was one of the happiest countries in the world. By the same token, it is by far the most popular county people want to migrate to. Go figure, maybe happy people migrate here so they too can be unhappy? They say misery loves company!

People today are unhappy, or unsatisfied with many things. These include the government, politicians, economy, etc. Many experts point the finger at social media. With so many young people online displaying how happy they are, why then, are they are so unhappy?


Last week we discussed how to be a friend to the world and thus become an enemy of God (Report #36). In this same section of scriptures in the NIV (James 4:1-7), God gives us some insight as to why people are unhappy. God shows us that People fight and quarrel because of their desires that battle within them. People desire what they do not have.

Think about that, your desires cause a battle inside you.  It is because desires are based on the things you don’t have and there is a boatload of things (like cash) we all don’t have. No matter what we have (and we see this with the rich and famous), there is always someone with a better house, car, yacht, etc. The number of things we can desire are limitless. No matter what people have, they desire more. This is the battle within them that causes unhappiness.


Solomon, the richness, and wisest man that ever lived said that with all his wealth, he denied himself nothing (he had 700 wives and 300 concubines and all the wealth of the world). Yet after he reviewed his life, he said the end was meaningless, like chasing after the wind; and nothing was gained (Ecclesiastes 2:10-1, NIV). This is what he said at the end of his life:

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (NIV) here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.


Happiness is based on a person’s external conditions that are triggered by things outside of themselves.  If things are not good, we are not happy. Things like what other people are doing, or what they have, things that we may not have, places we want to go, things we have missed; and events that are deemed negative.  People believe if you feel good, then you are happy. But it’s not your feelings that count, it’s your standing or position in Christ which does not change. 


Joy in the Lord

Our POSITION as Christians is NOT dependent on the CONDITIONS that surround us or on our “feelings.” Feelings come and go, but with our acceptance of Christ comes the guarantee of Joy in all situations. We just have to exercise it. I think Active Christianity states it clearly:

“…we normally equate this word [happiness] with our human feelings and emotions, when actually, a Christian life should not be lived on the basis of feelings at all, but on the basis of faith!”[2]

And this faith (think of the wore “trust”) brings us joy. Don’t you want to be Joyful (Full of Joy)?  As a Christian we should not concentrate on being happy, but instead, we should live in the “JOY” we are guaranteed as a child of God. The word “Happy” occurs 25 times in the KJV Bible, but the word “Joy” occurs 155 times, more than six time more!  You can be six time more content with Joy compared to contending to be ‘happy.’

As excellent example of not being ruled by our situations is what Peter and another disciple did after they were flogged for speaking about Christ. Were they unhappy? No, they rejoiced that they were worthy enough to be beaten for the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 5:40-41).


You can’t be re-happy and you can happy-ful, but something interesting happens with Joy. You are joyful and you continue to be joyful, and you repeat this, you become full of joy, you are JOYFUL are, RE-JOICE.  If you are concentrating on being happy, you are doing it wrong. Joy is the secret to contentment:

Philippians 4:10-13 (NIV) 10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord…for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this [e.g., being joyful] through him who gives me strength.

So, practice your JOY, work on your JOY, exercise your JOY, test your JOY, manifest your JOY in the Lord. When you do this enough, before long, you will see you will be full of JOY and you will be REJOICING!
