Death Penalty

The death penalty is a difficult issue for many Christians to accept. They view God as a loving God, and a God of life. Of course, God is a loving God and  a God of Life, but people find it difficult to reconcile this with a God that supports the death penalty.

By the same token, many Christians believe that you should not kill a baby in the womb, and they are correct, this is Biblically true. They believe if you are “pro-life” regarding a baby, you must also be “pro-life” regarding a murderer. They say the belief in saving the life of a baby and supporting the death penalty are inconsistent in their mind. As a result, there are Christians dead set against the death penalty because of their view of the Bible.

In this Post, we will review the background on why the death penalty is essential for a just and fair society, as it protects the just from the unjust. The Death Penalty actually is pro-life and a great benefit to society.

Where did the belief that the death Penalty is biblically wrong begin? Many have a mistaken idea about the death penalty because of one particular verse in the King James version of the Bible:

Is God Against the Death Penalty

Many have a mistaken idea about the death penalty. They believe God is against it because of one particular verse in the King James Version that was mistranslated:

Exodus 20:13  Thou shalt not kill.                (KJV) King James Version

This one mis-translated word has caused so much confusion in the world and among Christians, and has caused many people to have a misinformed view of God’s instructions for a safe society. Some Christians also claim that they are “pacifists” and don’t believe in fighting for the Armed Forces or for the Death Penalty. The word “kill” is clearly a mis-translation, and it is translated in 15 other versions as the word “murder.” Even in the New King James, it was corrected:

NKJV   “You shall not murder…                       New King James Version
NIV     “You shall not murder…                        New International Version
ESV     “You shall not murder…                       English Standard Version
NASB  “You shall not murder…                       New American Standard Bible
NET    “You shall not murder…                       New English Translations 2nd Edition
LSB    “You shall not murder…                        Legacy Standard Bible
NRSV  You shall not murder…                         New Revised Standard Version
BSB    You shall not murder…                         Berean Standard Bible
ERV   Thou shalt do no murder…                  English Revised Version
NLT    “You must not murder…                       New Living Translation
HCSB  Do not murder…                           Holman Christian Standard Bible (Free Version)
CSB    Do not murder…                               Christian Standard Bible
CEV    Do not murder…                                 Contemporary English Version
GWT  “Never murder…                                 GOD’S WORD® Translation
GNT   “Do not commit murder…                  Good News Translation

You can see that a single word’s incorrect translation in the Bible can lead to a completely different belief system. If you believe that Exodus is saying “Do not Kill,” then you could believe all types of killing is wrong. On the other hand, if that one word is translated “murder,” that would mean that God supports the death penalty.  It’s very easy to change a word in the Bible and to “play games” with those words. You can build a whole belief system on what you think the Bible says. But we have to dig deeper to understand what the Bible correctly says:

Matthew 5:18 (NIV) For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

We should not change a single letter or a simple stroke of a pen.

Is God Pro-Life?

Some believe taking the life of someone as a death penalty is not pro-life. In fact, the death penalty is incredibly affirming of life.  God says many times there’s nothing more valuable than a human life [1]. The death penalty affirms the value of law-abiding people and it keeps society safe as a result.

Genesis 9:5-7 (NIV) …from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being. 6 “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind. 7 As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”

Who can see here God has clearly given the responsibility for administering the death penalty to humans. Some people say, “If God wants this murderer dead, let God kill him.” This is wrong theology since God, in the very beginning of the Bible, gave humans the responsibility to kill those who murder others.

What is really interesting here is that God says that if we obey Him and administer the death penalty to murderers, we will be fruitful and increase in number on the earth.  How can killing a person result in more humans? The answer is easy, when you eliminate a murderer, then they cannot murder anyone else, so some other person’s life will be saved. In addition, it sends a clear message to the rest of society that if you murder someone, your life will also be forfeited.

The Murderer is to be Put to Death

Here is what God has to say about Murderers:

Exodus 21:12 (NIV) “Anyone who strikes a person with a fatal blow is to be put to death.
Numbers 35:16-17  (NIV) “ ‘If anyone strikes someone a fatal blow with an iron object, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death.
17 Or if anyone is holding a stone and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death.
18 Or if anyone is holding a wooden object and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death…”
19 The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death; when the avenger comes upon the murderer, the avenger shall put the murderer to death.

What is also interesting here is that the family member of the slain person was charged with putting the murderer to death. This was a relatively good system, but it has its own problems.

Is the Death Penalty a Deterrent to Others from Murdering?

There have been several studies that claim that the Death Penalty is not a deterrent to stop murderers.  These are all misguided studies since, in today’s society, the extremely rare death penalty is not carried out for 20-30 years after the crime. By that time, the people may have forgotten, and friends and family members may have moved on. This is what the Bible has to say about that:

Ecclesiastes 8:11 (NIV) When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong.

So if someone murders someone else, and they are put to death by today’s system 20-30 years later, that death sentence is NOT a deterrent to others.  A murderer may think, “If I kill this person and I’m caught, I’ll have at least 20 good years of food and board courtesy of the state.” This is not a deterrent. The delay of a death sentence only encourages more murder.

Bail is a Deterrent to Crime

The above verse about a sentence being carried out for a crime quickly not only applied to murder, but any crime, even those of much less seriousness.  Bail is a “Bond” or a “Promise” that the person who is charged with the crime will appear before the Judge at a future time. There are three ways it could be administered

    1. Released without bail (Trusted to appear for their trial)
    2. Set bail (They pay a fee that is returned after expenses if they show up to court)
      1. Cash Bail (They pay the amount right there)
      2. Bail Bond (They pay a Bail Bondsman to put up the money for them for a fee)
    3. Denied bail (For serious cases)

Some cities are trying to say there is no reason to set bail for a person who has committed a lower-level crime. In this one horrible example from the Gateway Pundit, we see this person committed, was arrested, and let go 49 times for his crimes. He committed Battery (Unlawful physical contact with intent to harm) about six times!  Then he goes onto a Chicago train and douses a female with gasoline and sets her on fire!

Releasing criminals without bail only encourages them to commit more crimes since there is no penalty for their actions.

Good Laws Carried Out Properly

1 Timothy 1:8 (NIV) We know that the law is good if one uses it properly.

The bottom line is that we need good laws, and we need to use them properly. That means we need the death penalty to be carried out quickly to deter murders; and we need to institute bail, especially for repeat offenders, for less severe crimes, to assure the criminals will appear before their trial to deter others from committing lower-level crimes.
