To the Iranian Armed Forces:
You are the heirs to the patriotic and renowned commanders of this land—from Ariobarzan, Bahram Chobin, and Surena, to Babak Khorramdin, Ya’qub Leyth, and Maziar, to Jahanshah and Khosrodad and Rahimi.
How can you remain silent and inactive in the face of the swaggering and taunting of foreign agents and criminals affiliated with the Islamic Republic in the streets of Iran—from the Popular Mobilization Forces and Hezbollah in Lebanon, to Afghan and Pakistani terrorists?
The Islamic Republic and its terrorist and repressive IRGC have, before your very eyes, slaughtered tens of thousands of the purest and bravest sons and daughters of this country, and every day send more to their deaths. These occupiers of Iranian soil, with their apocalyptic and destructive madness, have placed the nation on the brink of annihilation.
How have you turned a blind eye to these realities and withdrawn from playing your role in defending the realm and the people? How will history and future generations of Iran judge you?
Recall your national and patriotic oath and commitment. Step forward into the fray. Defend the honor and integrity of Iran’s National Army against the Islamic Republic and its foreign mercenaries.

The Shah left in Jan of 79. Khomeini took power in Feb of 79 and the Hostages were taken in Nov of 79 and freed in Jan of 81. They were not taken to get rid of the Shah. He was already ousted for nearly a year by that point and (I think) by then he was living in the USA.
The effort to oust the Shah was driven by hatred of the Americans who the Iranians believed installed him. So, the hostage taking was an extension of that and was intended to keep the Americans at bay while the Ayatollah consolidated power. Just curious did you live through that period?

Mom had the local news on every night and we got the evening paper delivered plus we had cable so there was also CNN (who definitely was not the same as it is today) occasionally on (when the Atari 2600 was put away). I’d consider myself better informed than most of my peers at the time.

I guess because it had been shown so many times that the viewers were oversaturated with it by then. It was a whole patrol cycle before I finally saw it (no internet back then of course). I was in for Desert Storm but again we were far from the action. Certain watch stations like mine did have to be strapped for that patrol (which was unusual for us). That was about it really…

Witkoff undermined Iran talks by peddling lies to build case for military aggression: Report
US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to West Asia, Steve Witkoff, undermined the negotiations with Iran by peddling lies to build a case for military aggression, according to a report citing regional diplomats.
“In that first meeting, both the Iranian negotiators said to us directly, […], that they controlled 460 kilograms of 60%,” Witkoff said Monday in a Fox interview, referring to the uranium’s level of enrichment.
“And they’re aware that that could make 11 nuclear bombs, and that was the beginning of their negotiating stance,” he claimed.
“They were proud of it,” Witkoff further claimed. “They were proud that they had evaded all sorts of oversight protocols to get to a place where they could deliver 11 nuclear bombs.”
However, a Persian Gulf diplomat with direct knowledge of the talks said that Witkoff’s description of the conversation was false.
The Iranians told Witkoff that Iran was willing to give up the enriched uranium as part of a new agreement with Trump, according to the unnamed Persian Gulf diplomat.
The Iranians also told Witkoff that Iran enriched the uranium after Trump pulled out of a 2015 nuclear agreement brokered by the Obama administration.
