Protecting Ships Passing Through the Strait of Hormuz Using Frozen Iranian Assets

On reader provided a proposal on the best strategic use of frozen Iranian assets. At a high level, the proposal is to utilize the frozen assets as insurance to compensate any private company for damage done by Iran to their ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The specifics of the proposal are:
- Offer the Insurance to all companies with ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz at no charge
- Reimburse any company incurring damage to their property at a level of 1.5 times the actual dollar value of the damage.
- Provide additional funding to the company for up to 6 months to compensate for the loss of use of any ship that is damaged.
- The medical costs for any individual injured in an attack will be fully covered. Further, punitive damages will be awarded to the individual based on the severity of the injury.
- The United States will be in charge of processing all insurance claims and will do so in an expedited manner.
- The US Navy will continue to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz in an attempt to ensure safe passage. The insurance is simply an additional safe guard to remove financial risks for those choosing to utilize the Strait for the transport of goods.
This type of insurance will provide a very substantial financial incentive for companies to challenge any potential Iranian threat to close the Strait. The proposal certainly makes it financially feasible to transport goods through the Strait and as such should prevent Iran from holding the world’s economy hostage.  Finally, the implementation of this proposal will clearly demonstrate negotiating from a position of strength.
