The US government knows a lot more about the drones flying in our skies than is being shared.

Per an experienced commercial pilot, all drones over 250gm have to have a functioning transponder, and file the flight with the FAA. The operator has to be registered, and linked to the drone, all so the FAA can monitor the flight and operator. If they do not comply with these regulations, then they break the Law.
It’s pretty clear cut.
The FAA requires drones to be registered as noted below.
Federal law requires all drones operated under 14 CFR Part 107 to be registered. The limited statutory exception for recreation requires registration of all aircraft weighing more than .55 pound (250 grams). All registered aircraft must have their registration number displayed on the exterior. Review the UAS registration information to learn more about the program.
It all comes under “Drone remote ID” regulations. The FAA does not want collisions with other operators/aircraft. They must have some knowledge as to what is going on.
Any comments from the FAA that they don’t know what is going on are untrue. You can’t fly any drone of any size without being registered.
