Movie Review of the Odyssey – “Who Knew Ancient Mycenaean Greece Was So Diverse?”

I’m watching the scathing reviews pour in for Christopher Nolan’s reinterpretation of the classic Greek epic, The Odyssey. Chances are, you’ve seen them too.
But I haven’t seen a review explaining why this movie is objectively bad beyond mere personal preference…so I wrote one.
You read that correctly: I said objectively—not subjectively. This isn’t a matter of preferring chocolate ice cream over vanilla. It’s more like choosing ice cream over strychnine.
Nolan has acknowledged drawing inspiration from Emily Wilson’s acclaimed translation of The Odyssey, a translation that filters Homer through a contemporary progressive lens by emphasizing themes of gender, power, oppression, and social justice in ways that differ from traditional translations. Critics argue that choices such as describing female servants as “slaves,” rendering polytropos as “complicated man,” and presenting Odysseus less as an epic hero than as a morally ambiguous figure reflect modern interpretive assumptions rather than faithfully translating the essence of the Greek.

The result is not merely a new translation, but a reinterpretation shaped by contemporary ideological frameworks—often described as feminist or intersectional—at the expense of the poem’s traditional heroic ethos and mythic grandeur.
“Always be the best, my son, and surpass the others, and do not disgrace the generation of your fathers.” Iliad 6.208–210
This movie isn’t merely about art, but the politics of deconstruction, and so evaluations based on personal opinion or taste are worthless. The angst-inducing mosh pit of social media noise presents myriad opinions “told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing,” that shed little light on the issue.
Most of the critiques I see, including on one of my favorite movie review channels: fellow Scotsman, The Critical Drinker, focus on issues like historical authenticity: Helen of Troy was imagined as a fair-skinned Greek woman…and Achilles was definitely not imagined as a 90-pound woman pretending to be a man.
Many of us share the Drinker’s frustration: Can’t we simply enjoy a great story without being bludgeoned by “The Message!?”

But even these criticisms don’t cut to the heart of why we are objectively right to dislike this movie.
I contend this movie is bad because it peddles lies and robs a generation of a priceless treasure. It presents a modern reinterpretation as though it makes Homer more “accessible” and “relatable” by substituting contemporary ideological dogmas for the worldview of the original. This isn’t simply artistic license; it blurs the distinction between what The Odyssey is and what modern interpreters wish it had been.
It doesn’t connect us to Homer or enlighten us with works of great literature, it buries Homer and mutilates his sublime work, and that does violence to our cultural heritage.
French philosopher Jacques Derrida (1930–2004) was one of the principal architects of postmodern thought and the founder of deconstruction, a method of literary criticism that challenged the idea that texts possess a single, objective meaning rooted in an author’s intent. Instead, Derrida argued that meaning is fluid and shaped by language, culture, and the reader’s perspective. If everything is relative, and truth a mere construct based on personal interpretation, why not “reimagine” a classic?
Applied to the Odyssey, this approach encourages each generation to reinterpret Homer’s epic through contemporary lenses rather than seeking to understand its original worldview. Critics argue that this mindset transforms timeless classics into vehicles for modern ideological concerns, while supporters contend that it keeps ancient works relevant by allowing them to speak anew to each age.
But the deconstructionist view is simply untrue. Fact check: Homer did have an intent in composing these epics, and that intent was preserved through generations—first by oral tradition and later in written form—enriching the lives of millions. His poems arose from a particular people, culture, moral vision, and historical moment. The themes he deliberately wove into these masterful tales shaped the moral imagination of the Greek world, enlightened countless readers over the centuries, and became one of the foundational influences on Western civilization.
When we continually remake great works in our own image, we cease learning from them and instead demand that they affirm us. Rather than allowing the past to challenge our assumptions, we domesticate it to fit our own. Perhaps that’s one reason so many modern adaptations feel interchangeable: the heroic costumes don’t quite fit and the spark just isn’t there.
As Wordsworth so presciently wrote in his poem “The Tables Turned” (1798):

Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things:
We murder to dissect.”
We carve up a woman to pretend she’s a man, and that’s her choice, but rational people can’t be expected to play along or conform to dysphoria and mutilation. Nor can we pretend the constant deconstruction of Western culture isn’t tearing it limb from limb, or that a banana duct taped to a wall is art to anyone above the IQ of a chimpanzee.
By constantly “reinterpreting” the story through a modern lens, idealogues distort the message, depriving society from experiencing the enrichment of a brilliant mind. It’s a theft of beauty, and an assault on meaning. That’s why so many modern movies are objectively terrible—they’re the same message repeated over and over through a “reimagining” of multiple movies. They’re burying the brilliance of Homer, stealing it from a society more in need of a diversity of thought than of skin color.
Marcus Tullius Cicero spoke these wise words: “To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child.” (Orator, 120)
“But,” one may ask, “how is this any different from a modern adaptation like Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew becoming 10 Things I Hate About You?”

It’s a fair question, but a false comparison.
The 1999 film starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles is an affectionate homage to Shakespeare. It doesn’t pretend to replace the original, to “correct” its worldview, or deconstruct it into something fundamentally different. Instead, it borrows the story’s central themes and reimagines them in a contemporary setting while leaving Shakespeare’s work intact. That’s very different from approaching a classic with the intention of reinterpreting it through a modern ideological framework or recasting its meaning to better reflect contemporary values.
The Iliad and the Odyssey belong to a Western civilization, Greek culture, and a particular historical moment. We can never recreate that world perfectly, but we should strive to understand it as faithfully as possible. Stretching ourselves to enter another time and place is not merely intellectually enriching—it is essential to genuine wisdom and human flourishing.
This monstrosity of a movie is a Trojan horse for the warped political ideology that’s robbing the world of its color, vitality and cultural richness. Some gifts are best left outside the gates. 🐴

I would actually pre-order tickets if Musk funded and Mel Gibson directed. I was disappointed that Gibson's Maccabeus film was scuttled thanks to Joe Eszterhás' tantrum.
Not a huge fan of Critical Drinker. His voice drives me crazy and he's not very consistent on "THE MESSAGE" either. He'll turn a blind eye if he likes the movie.
That said, I hate Nolan. He is the most overrated director out there along with Robert Eggers. Long, boring, self-indulgent. Had it not been for Dark Knight Nolan wouldn't have a career. I don't like Tom Holland. The guy simply cannot act. And Damon has all the charisma of a piece of driftwood.
As for Odyssey? Even the woman who butchered the original for her feminist translation has blasted Nolan's version as too woke lol.
Rotten Tomatoes got caught red handed fixing the user reviews. Like we didn't know already.
Nolans take home is 20% of the films gross. This will have to make close to 800 million just to break even.
The films "modern English" is also a huge turnoff. Mel Gibson got that part right with Apocalypto and Passion where he at least tried to recreate the dialect.
Like watching Indiana Jones where the NAZI's speak English with a fake German accent. Or you can watch any movie produced before The 70's such as The Longest Day or Tora Tora Tora where the actors speak their native languages. Hollyweird today thinks the audience is too stupid for subtitles.
I’ve discussed this with a lot of people and sadly a lot of movie goers are too lazy to read subtitles. It would be nice if the director would give you the option on the dvd/blu ray to select the original dialect.
In Saving Private Ryan the Nazi's spoke German which is a good contemporary example.

When I watch 9th Company, I watch it in the original Russian with English subtitles. The same with Downfall, Das Boot, Stalingrad and many others.

Subtitles helped my two children how to read at a young age.
Putting on a Kid's Show with subtitles & lower volume teaches them to quickly read the Dialouge while also listening to it; before it disappears.
They might be onto something there, however. Have you seen the test scores for reading nowadays?

yeah another one bites the dust, somehow i remember memento being his best. I mean, i think i remember. where was I?
I remember Memento, it was one of my first Blu-Ray movies purchased actually when full HD Blu-Ray movies and players started coming out (it was a Playstation 3 for me). A very unusual and mind-bending movie. But Nolan's Oppenheimer, which I broke down and had to see it in the movie theater for the full effects, was in my opinion his best work. From the brilliant casting and performance of Cillian Murphy to the cinematography and sets. I'm glad I saw it on the big screen, and paid a chunk of money for the comfy big chair theater where you can order food and drinks for a three-hour movie.

I liked the two-season Manhattan series a lot better than Oppenheimer. Dunkirk was great.

It is really amazing that in a world that has a very long history of wars between countries based on race, creed, and religion, the entertainment industry keeps pushing this narrative of how diverse world history was and how everyone got along together regardless of their skin color or origin.
The Roman empire didn't tolerate the Jews, the Anglo Saxens, the Arabs, etc. because they viewed them as equals they tolerated them because they were a source of income in a land they conquered, they were subjects of the Roman Empire. It is the same with every other conquering entity in history, they didn't conquer foreign lands to welcome the people into their fold, they conquered them to take their wealth and land and control the people.
The interesting thing about the Romans is that they had many sub-Saharan black African people among them, many serving as both slaves as well as in the Roman Army. The slaves, like their white slave brethren, would often earn their freedom by their masters and go on to owning their own slaves. Imagine a black Roman freed slave who went on to be a successful merchant for example and have enough money to own white slaves, LOL!

I've got a great suggestion for "woke " Hollywood. Do the Aristophanes play about the women all dressed up as men, who get into the body politic in order to vote (which they were not allowed to) but at the time, it was a satire on the weak, effeminate, useless men in the body politic in Athens at the time, and that fake men aka women, wouldn't even be noticed as fake.

I have studied Homer's various writings in HS in the early 70s. Never would we get a trans soldier or a black Helen. No way am I going to see this movie. Hollywood needs to stop this "woke" and get back to real writing and production.
It's been awhile since I read The Iliad and The Odyssey. Via torrent, I got the Odyssey and just jumped through most of it. I took about 20 to 30 minutes to sample the 2 hour and 52 minute movie. Saw the ending, but yea/meah, it's too long to bear through all of it. They couldn't render Polyphemus a bit better with the CGI that's available now? And I had no desire to view the black actress parts, so I avoided them. It would just disgust me to view anything further, which, thanks to that casting and no real Greek actors, I'll pass on supporting by buying a ticket to the theater.
So a black female African migrant plays white Helen Of Troy. When will we see Hollywood make a movie about Rosa Parks being played by Anne Hathaway?

LOL! I know a Greek family, grew up next door to them (and learned a LOT of good family Greek recipes from them). They even got me into studying Greek Mythology. They are beyond offended…they are flat out PISSED at the casting of Helen. It's a slap in the face to their heritage and culture.

Each family has their own version of it, but if it doesn't have cinnamon in the meat mixture (more authentic recipes use ground lamb or a mixture of ground lamb, beef, and pork for budgets), it's not moussaka! They taught me how to make Spanakopita as well, with seemingly endless layers of Phyllo dough. You have to work fast to keep those layers from drying out!

Their recipe I've had for 40+ years, given to my mother originally, has nutmeg as part of the bechamel sauce (typical classic bechamel), but not for the meat sauce.
Why get so upset? It's not like they messed with the sacred texts of comic book characters. Imagine if you made a Superman film where you changed his planet of origin to a place populated by black midgets. Oh the fanboys who defend Nolan would surely get their panties in a twist.

This is why I never watch Netflix or any modern-day movies/TV. The last great ones I remember were before TV went digital, like "Fargo" and old John Wayne movies. Oh, and the original Star Wars. That's it.
A few remakes are good. Midway, Top Gun: Maverick, True Grit. Star Wars and Star Trek are dead to me now, except for the originals. Checkout John Wayne's first Technicolor movie: "Shepherd of the Hills". He's not the star, but it's great.
Harrison Ford's The Fugitive (1993) changed a few things from the 1960s TV series, but it pretty much captured the spirit of the original.
The reason Homer, Aristophanes and Euripides are relevant today, is that they all address the basic human condition. Some through epic, some through tragedy and some through satire mixed with outrageous comedy.

I have heard great reviews about this movie as well as this authors criticism which leads me to see it for myself and make up my own mind. I do grow weary of other people trying to tell me what's good or not based on their personal opinion of something.

I love Homer, as a kid I read The Illiad twice and The Odyssey several times. I refuse to watch this movie since they decided to make Helen an ugly black woman. If you are mindful, claiming a lack of diversity more likely speaks to the scope of its influence, which tends to contradict European historians' view that they controlled the world. All great civilizations then and now were quite diverse (i.e., Ancient Egypt, America today). Rome and Greece were conquered so many times that the fictional representation in all the Hollywood depictions of both ancient civilizations is laughable.

In 1965, Telly Savalas played Pontius Pilate (a Roman, and the Romans were descended from the Trojans!) in The Greatest Story Ever Told. But as someone who actually reads the Bible, I very much dislike the script of that movie, because it often takes quotes out of the mouth of someone from one context and inserts them into the mouth of someone else in a totally different context. I guess the scriptwriters just thought, "Hey, it's religious language, so we can use it for effect wherever."

Best review I've read of the film compares and contrasts the original story by Homer to the script written by this woman. The essence of the review is that she devalued all the morals and messaging in the tale that Homer conveyed, replacing them with trite feelings.
If the writing is as sophomoric as the reviewer described, then count me out.

I wonder if you read the article and understand it's not a polemic on race, but on deconstructing good literature. I could do a movie based on Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe or the Ramayana and depict prince Rama with a southern accent and a drinking problem, but then those depictions do the original literature, history and message an injustice. If you don't already know the story, Nolan doesn't bother to tell it. It is not in context. It does check the boxes it will need to win an Oscar; which I'm sure it will. I read somewhere that Nolan's interpretation of the Odyssey is like an Atheist interpreting the Bible.

Apart from all the balderization that Nolan had indulged in, I would have preferred if he had called his 'epic' Odysseus rather than 'The Odyssey'. His combination of 'The Iliad', 'The Odyssey', and "The Aeneid', is a confusing mish mash of stories which will probably not concern the average film goer, but certainly misinforms them about the Greek and Roman classics.

Don't know where the ending came from but it's not the true ending of the story because Ulysses and his queen do not sail away from Ithaca after he comes home and defeats the squatters and who are the giant armored warriors they run into in the forest that kills many of his men and destroys two ships, where is that in the story?
He also doesn't talk with the Cyclops and tells him his name is Nobody then get's him drunk on whine which makes him pass out before poking his eye out, that's a major part of the story.
