This is consistent with our post five days ago when we started with what Gordon Chang said –

China is broke. China’s rulers are desperate. Bad things are going to happen in that country.

Domestically, desperate local bureaus in cities like Shenzhen are using big-data tracking to force citizens to repay COVID-era unemployment benefits and pandemic allowances, while hitting businesses with corporate back-taxes dating back decades.

From raiding private insurance policies to squeezing ordinary workers, Beijing is treating private assets as its own open piggy bank.

When an authoritarian state squeezes both global investors and its own struggling populace just to stay solvent, economic stability becomes purely an illusion.

We reported earlier that China’s economy was cracking.

China’s economy was praised as the model for the Western world. Then, a few years back, it began to turn sour.  President Trump’s first administration did a number on China, which is why they wanted him gone.  This alone may be why China was involved in the COVID outbreak in 2019-20 (as reported in the book, The Steal – Volume I: Setting the Stage).

In 2023, the world began to see China’s economy falter.  We reported on a piece at the Business Insider.

It’s been clear for years that the Chinese real-estate market has been in trouble. China has a population of 1.4 billion, but it has built housing for a population of 3 billion, according to expert estimates. Many of the mega-developments became empty monuments to Beijing’s insatiable desire for growth. In Shenyang, farmers have taken over a development of empty mansions for cattle grazing.

At that time, real estate giant Evergrand began reporting problems, and it finally dissolved a few years ago.

Now the value of real estate in China is collapsing to its lowest prices in at least the last 20 years.

In response, the government instituted a law saying that it will not allow some people to leave the country, maybe.

Beijing has quietly redrawn the line between citizen and suspect, and it did it with a single word.

Under China’s new Regulations on Exit and Entry Administration, effective September 15 but already being trialed at some ports, one term appears again and again: “may.” Not “did.” Not “will.” May. If an official decides you “may endanger national security, interests, industrial security, or technical security,” you can be barred from leaving the country. Nowhere does the text define what “may endanger” actually means.

That vagueness is the point. The power to stop you at the border has been pushed all the way down the chain, provincial governments, the Commerce Ministry, even county-level offices can now decide who flies and who stays. As geopolitics scholar Chen Wen-chia puts it: you’re no longer flagged for what you did, but for what someone imagines you might do.

This is the machinery of a paranoid state, jumping at its own shadow. China has flipped its legal logic from punishing crimes after the fact to preventing exit before anything happens. State firms are reportedly already tightening travel approvals for staff. Those labeled a “threat” abroad can be blocked from leaving for six months to three years after they return.

Why now? Because the regime is scared. With the economy sagging and public anger simmering, Beijing fears its own people voting with their feet, and fears even more what they say when they come back. Engineers in semiconductors, AI, and finance should read the fine print: you may be next on the watchlist.

The message to 1.4 billion people is chillingly simple: the door is closing, and no one will tell you why. (Aric’s note: Regarding China’s current population, some analyses and experts believe it is far smaller than the official figures claim, though the actual data remains unclear.)

      • You're is a good point. But the "educated" elite in college and their students live in ivory towers that dream about the utopia a Communist state will create.

    • The danger is that the Communist leaders may try to unite the country behind a war against Western aggression — possibly at Taiwan and Japan, which would involve the US for sure.

      The other danger is that the regime may order an aggressive crackdown on its population similar to the Cultural Revolution – purging the country of all capitalist-profit orientated businesses and businessmen, while reinstituting Maoist philosophy.

      As for watching Mamdani, only a fool would do that. Mamdani will fail because he doesn't have the power to succeed, nor the backing of the citizens of this country. Communism-state ownership of everything may have a ready audience among the intellectual elite and college students, but the average citizen values the right to own possessions, particularly land.

      China has had a taste of what modern life can be like when they have the ability to improve their lives with a choice of consumer goods. Take that away and there will be unrest, possibly even civil war. The key is to insure that such unrest does not result in China striking out.

        • Before WW2, the US military was ranked 19 in the world. We had no tanks, no modern aircraft. The navy was tiny with about 100 ships.

          We essentially built it all during the war. No country could keep up.

          We are a the most industrious nation in the world with unparalleled resources including human resources. We can even feed ourselves if necessary. And we are now energy independent and a net exporter.

          Capitalism along with our vast resources, human intellect, and innovation has made us the most powerful nation in Earth. None of that has really changed.

China is hoovering up tons and tons of gold. Eliminating restrictions for consumers to buy gold. The economy is running on borrowed money, debt through the roof. Their economy is based on exports and that is having issues – the U.S. is not playing that game anymore. They have immediate and fundamental structural problems – can’t get consumers to spend.       When analysts speak of a country “cracking open”, it usually refers to severe economic strains forcing its government to implement tighter centralized rules. The entire article is filled with citation examples of what China is doing to “tighten rules” to prevent itself from “cracking open”.

      Because economies are affected in different ways across its various sectors and timelines, you’d be correct that “cracking open” is a reference to ALL THE ABOVE as it is “failing, and foundering, and going bankrupt” all at the same time throughout its various markets.

  26. That graph shows residential real estate prices rising for 20 years, not falling. In fact the real adjusted index for residential real estate is 95 in 2026. So the statement is true, but not the graph…which may not be adjusted for inflation.

There are several credible podcasters on youtube who are backing this up, 2 educated Chinese immigrant women (each with their iwn podcast indepependent of one another) who can read and understand Chinese and keep a close eye on what is going on over there, and the other is an American man who lived for years in China and hates the CCP. All 3 of them are giving the same read on the situation in China that Gordon Chang has. After seeing all this and what little is reported in the Media AND understanding Economics and the profound deficencies innate to a Communist (or quasi-Communist or Communist-Fascist) system, I have no doubt that China has some HUGE, MASSIVE problems going on in their economy and their society and the CCP's day of reckoning is soon at hand. Think of all of the stock market and economic and supply and demand imbalance corrections the USA and the West have experienced over the last 40 years. Now imagine the same should have applied to China but it was carefully hidden and subsidized away by their central planners and all of these woes just kept building up and compounding with correction, without resetting to balance.       • I think you are right about their domestic agenda, but we ought not forget their actions in Korea during the Korean War or turn a blind eye to their stated ambitions about invading Taiwan or replacing the USA as the preeminent world power or their massive unprecedented in size intelligence operations in the US and likely Western Europe, nor should we ignore their significant military buildup and their extremely aggressive behavior in the South China Sea, particularly in regard to The Philippines.

  55. One great weakness that people overlook is the Yangtze dam. One missile could devastate China economically. This is probably a huge deterrent to Chinese aggression.

    Both Wuhan and Shanghai are downstream and would likely be wiped out with a catastrophic failure and that would do irrecoverable harm to their industry.

    The dam itself was poorly located and it's foundation is weak. They cancelled experts who warned against the site rather than take heed, much like the Soviets did regarding warnings with Chernobyl.

  92. Hope it's true. I lived in Shanghai 2006 thru 2007. Wild, fascinating place. We all, including two young kids; loved it. It was weird. For instance, in our "compound" our kids had more freedom to be kids than in the US. They could ride their bikes where ever, play in the pond, build a fort in the greenery, etc. In Asia big company expats (my wife worked for one, it was peak China influx) tend to live in "Compounds"; large clusters of walled off, guarded, and darn nice places. In Shanghai ours had 300 huge homes (6,000sf or so) and 10 ten story apartment buildings! In Ho Chi Minh Vietnam our "compound" had about 30 homes. In Penang Malaysia the "compounds" gave way to huge apartment complexes. Ours had 4 forty story ones. Each apartment was one floor, 7BR's, 5BA's, etc. And your own elevator lobby, with two elevators! Right on the beach, from our 23rd floor unit we could watch the pair of monitor lizards stroll the beach in front of us. Oops, off topic, just wanted to show I spent Asia time. Plus two more years in the Army, waay Eastern Turkey and near the DMZ in S Korea.
    My recap of China's future is that of a fancy, hitech train (and we took several trips on theirs, too bad Gov Hairgel didn't seek their help) that is barrelling to the next station. Spewing parts all along the way. Will it make it to the station? Or will enough stuff fall off to kill it dead in its tracks? I'd say the jury is still out.
