Report #48- The UnderDog Says: Jesus Christ is Our Bridge Over Troubled Water
Many Christian and many others agree that we live in troubled times. Years ago, the duo Simon and Garfunkel released their song “A Bridge Over Troubled Water.” The song tells of someone who will lay themselves down to help another over their troubles in life. The water is a symbol for difficult times and the bridge a symbol of overcoming:
“…when times get rough…Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down.”[1]
Jesus Christ laid down his life so that we may live. He is our bridge over troubled times. It is the Church, via the teaching of Jesus Christ, that is the bridge we need now in this country.
“The church is not intended to be a fortress to protect people from the world but rather a launching pad to propel people into the world.”[2]
Christians need to be actively engaged in ALL areas of the culture, including politics. This is so we can introduce that Bridge Over Troubled Water to the world. We need more Christians in government, and more Christian leaders (See Item #6 for ‘What is a Christian Leader’). What would this country look like if true Christians were our leaders, not beholding to others or being swayed by the promise of big payoffs? It would be a much better place. Many believe religious people need not be involved with Politics. This is because they ONLY want non-Christians in power to enact policies directed against Christians.
Politicians…often try to pander to Christians. They act religious when they may be marginal at best in their beliefs and practices. Using the church only for their own political purpose trivializes and demeans Christianity.[3]
When a country founded on Christian principles is experiencing serious “existential threats” (e.g., cheating on elections, etc.), what should our churches be teaching? Here are some basics:
- Teach From the Church Epistles
The Bible is clear that Christian’s should be taking direction from these 21 Church Epistles: Romans, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 & 2 Thessalonians, 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1 & 2 Peter, 1, 2 & 3 John, and Jude.
- The Old Testament is For Our Learning, but Not Written to Us
We should obtain learning from the Old Testament. The Old Testament is written to the Jewish nation. Can we learn from it, of course, but it is clear, it is not written “to us.” For example, Christians should not be participation in animal sacrifices. If I read a letter written to someone else, I could learn from that letter, but it was not directed to me specifically.
Romans 15:4 (NIV) For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
- The Gospels Were Written to the Jewish Nation
The Gospels were written for the Jews. Remember that Jesus came to save the Jewish people. It was Years after the Day of Pentecost that salvation became available to the Gentiles.
Matthew 10:5-6 (NIV) 5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.
Matthew 15:24 (NIV)…[Jesus] answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”
- Salvation Is Important in the Epistles
Many theologians agree the most important, or least one of the most important messages in the Epistles is, salvation by grace through faith. Jesus died so we may be saved, so one of the most important messages is for Christians to tell others about Jesus Christ so that they too can be saved.
Romans 10:9 (KJV) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Romans 10:14-15:
- How can they who don’t believe call on Jesus?
- How can they believe unless they hear?
- How can they hear without a preacher?
- How can preachers teach unless they are sent?
- When sent, preachers bring glad tidings of good things!
It would be fantastic in this country to hear “glad tiding of good things!’ I would love to hear it. The question remains, however, who are these preachers?
- All Christians Are God’s Preachers
God intended every Christian to be a Preacher and Minister for Him. No, you don’t have to go to Seminary school, you don’t need years of training, you can simply speak what you know, or just tell your story. We are ALL Ambassadors for Christ!
2 Corinthians 5:18-21 (NIV) All this is from God… that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ…And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors…We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
- What is a Christian Leader, Preacher, Minister, Ambassador, Shepherd?
Of course, the best example of a Christian leader is Jesus:
John 10:11 (NIV) I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
Giving of yourself to others is being a good leader, minister, preacher, ambassador, shepherd. Helping others is key. What is the best help possibly available? To teach people they can have eternal life.
There are several examples of Christian leaders in the Bible, and they have various titles (e.g., Elder, Apostle, Pastor/Shepherd, Bishop/Overseer, Deacon, Teacher, Evangelist, Shepherd), but the title EVERY Christian has is ‘Minister’ or ‘Ambassador.’ We are all leaders for Christ bringing the Good News to others. And here is a wholesome goal: to Teach Others Who Will Teach Others.
Not all Christians can say they have brought someone to Christ, trained them, so they have successfully trained others also. There are four generations in the verse below, the person who taught Paul (Jesus), Paul, the person Paul taught, and the people Paul taught, who in turn teach others.

2 Timothy 2:2 (KJV) And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
In these trouble times, the absolute best thing you can be doing for yourself, for others, and for this country, is to teach others about Jesus Christ. You too can be a Minister, just open your mouth for Jesus. Ask your Pastor to teach YOU how to teach OTHERS!
