How To Be Especially Good – Part 2
A few weeks ago we talked about what it meant to be especially good. We talked about being good to yourself, family, and friends, those in need, and the community. We are to be good to everyone, but then we explored how the Bible tells us to be especially good to the household of faith, which is other Christians:
Galatians 6:10 (NIV) Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
The scriptures say ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’[1]; commended a group for their giving[2]; thanks for supporting the saints [3], and thanking those for giving to those in need [4]. Here are other things that the scripture says about being good and giving:
- You can’t buy your way to God.[5]
- The righteous graciously give.[6]
- He who shuts his eyes will have curses.[7]
- God remembers what we give[8]
- Feed the Hungry with Food and the Word[9]
- Absolutely No Virtue Signaling[10]
- Give Cheerfully[11]
- Don’t Steal, Work so you can give to others[12]
- Give based on your ability without obligation[13]
- It is a FREEWILL offering[14]
In this teaching, I am going to show how we can be especially good and what it exactly looks like.
Why Did the Eldest Son get a Double Portion in the OT?
Below is a detailed chart of how the first born male would receive double portion of an inheritance after their father’s death. He received this over the other male children. This was because the oldest child was responsible for taking care of the business he inherited from his father. His expenses would be greater than the other children and it was his responsibility to keep his father’s business going. For example, it would be responsible for paying for the food for the cattle, upkeep of the property and many other things. This was the responsibility of the oldest male, and this is why God instituted a double portion for the firstborn.

How do we take this Old Testament information and apply to today in relationship to Ephesians 6:10, where we are supposed to be especially good to the householder of faith?
Below is a detailed chart of how we can actually do this (Described in detail in the Video). You can see it doesn’t matter how many Christian organizations or how many secular organizations a Christian wants to give to. In this way this is even simpler than the Old Testament chart.
There is no option for a Christian to only give to secular organizations, they should always be given to Christian organizations or Christian people (This applies to time as well as to money). The bottom line is, all the Christian organizations or people you’re going to give to should be doubled and then divided amongst all these organizations. And all the secular organizations you’re going to give to are not doubled, and then divided amongst all of the secular organizations (See Chart Below). This is a simple way to apply the Old Testament teachings on a double portion to your giving in the modern day.
In the Old Testament, the money was given to the oldest so that he could do the work of his father. In the same way, a double portion should be given to Christian organizations so they could do the work of our heavenly Father.
The Below dollars can also be applied as the time spent volunteering for Christian organizations or people, compared to a secular organization or people.
