Three of our first five Presidents died on the Fourth of July.
Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died exactly 200 years ago today on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, which they both helped to write.
Daniel Webster wrote a famous eulogy for Adams and Jefferson that described the timing of their deaths as proof that God has blessed America.
James Monroe, who was promoted on the battlefield to the rank of Captain by George Washington after almost dying from his wounds in the Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776, died exactly five years later on July 4, 1831.
