Why to Be Against Slavery Reparations
“countries are legally obliged to consider reparations for the transatlantic slave trade” (per a Reuters news article)
“States parties must implement comprehensive reparatory measures for people of African descent, covering all aspects of remedies”
Most astonishing, the UN Committee said:
“the obligations arose from a legally binding 1965 convention on racial discrimination, not from the legal standards that existed when the slave trade took place.” (Reuters summary)
And…
“regardless of whether slavery and the slave trade were illegal under the laws of the day, countries remain responsible under current international obligations to tackle their continuing effects.” (Text of committee report)

While it’s a noble cause to oppose slavery and racial discrimination, it’s also a noble cause to oppose slavery reparations. Here’s why.
LEGAL
Article 1, Section 9, Clause 3 of the US Constitution states:
“No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto law shall be passed.”
The ex post facto provision directly contradicts the UN. You can’t be held accountable for a retroactive crime in America.
The government can’t declare you (or a group) guilty of a crime via legislation per the Bill of Attainder provision. You must be given a fair trial to be convicted of a crime, or plead guilty in open court.
You also can’t be convicted of a crime that someone else or a relative committed. If one of your ancestors committed a slave crime, they committed the crime, not you.
Article 1 of the 14th Amendment (ratified in 1868) says in part:
“No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
In other words, white and black people must be treated equally under the law.
MORAL
In the Ten Commandments, Deuteronomy 5:9 states:
“You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me”.
This verse is a softer version of the attainder clause in our Constitution. The verse permits attainder crime accusations up to four generations: your great-grandparents, your grandparents, your parents, and you. But it prohibits crime accusation based upon your great-great grandparents.
[Please note that in ancient times, attainder crimes were common, and the Bible actually limits their use. The US Constitution eliminated them.]
If the average generation is 25 years, a typical person would have a great-great grandparent born about 100 years before you. For most people, that’s after 1847, the latest possible year a slave-holding adult could have been born.
Not very many people today are going to be eligible for slavery reparations guilt under this Biblical verse.
OTHER REASONS
Here are some other problems in determining the justice of slavery reparations.
* The average black American is about 18% of white heritage, per DNA analysis. Many black people have slaveowner ancestry. How does this fit into the slave reparation equation? An example is the great Frederick Douglass, whose father was a slaveowner. Would Douglass’s descendants be criminals or victims based on slave reparation logic?
* What about the two million soldiers from the North who fought in the Civil War? They freed four million slaves. 360,000 northern soldiers died and another 280,000 were wounded. Are their descendants guilty of slavery reparation crimes? Or heroes?
* What about people who inherited slaves and then freed them? What about people who ran the underground railroad?
* What about abolitionists like John Brown? Or William Lloyd Garrison, who founded the Liberator newspaper in 1831? How are their descendants treated by the slave reparations advocates?
* About 100 million immigrants have come to America since the Civil War. How could their descendants be guilty of slavery crimes?
* Many black Americans have immigrated to America since the 1960s. Would they be eligible for slavery reparations?
* Are the descendants of illegal aliens from Central and South America guilty of slavery crimes?
* How far back in time do we have to go to hunt down slave crimes? Shall we go back to the Arab slave traders of the Middle Ages? Back to the ancient Romans and Greeks? To the ancient Chinese and Egyptians?
Shall we go back to when the Homo sapiens enslaved and killed off the Neanderthals?
* What about record-keeping problems? How many of us can’t document our ancestry back to the Civil War?
* What about adoptions?
Implementing slavery reparations would be a big fat mess. Pointing fingers at alleged victims or criminals is hopelessly complicated. Slavery reparations are wrong.
Perhaps they should pay reparations for all of the damage they have done to our country.

No one is being charged with, nor convicted of any crimes; the process of allocating federal money towards reparations worked perfectly fine when the reparations in question were going to the families of Japanese-American citizens, unjustly imprisoned in internment camps during WWII. And the compensation awarded to them for that similarly long-past, ignoble historical action in America no more required a criminal prosecution than any possible slavery-related reparations would require, either. All it takes is an act of Congress.
Heck — just this year alone, the trump administration itself unilaterally tried to inventively reappropriate nearly $1.8 Billion dollars of taxpayers’ money to ostensibly fund reparations intended for supposed “victims of government weaponization”. And the only merely quasi-judicial aspect of that whole contrived scheme was the pretextual lawsuit which the current president initiated, personally, against the very government he himself currently controls, resulting in the $1.8B “legal settlement” he accepted as both the plaintiff, and the defendant in that case. But that massive fund, the particular class of people trump claimed would be potentially eligible to receive a compensatory portion of it, and any such money those “eligible” parties would consequently receive, were in no way decided as a result of any criminal prosecution (much less any legal finding of guilt) against the “perpetrators”. It was just a chunk of taxpayer money the president decided he’d try to hand out as reparations to those purported “victims” he most sympathized with, solely according to his own personal discretion.
So this whole framing of slavery-related reparations as legally impossible — supposedly due to constitutional restrictions against Bills of Attainder, and ex post facto laws — is a ridiculous red herring. In the long history of heated discussions over this issue, none of the prominent proponents for creating a compensatory black-slavery/racial injustice reparations fund in America have ever promoted it as necessarily based on successful criminal proceedings, nor any other form of judicial process. Just like neither of those previously implemented examples of reparations mentioned above had, either. So while there’s certainly space to debate the merits, practicality or feasibility of such a reparations initiative, the story’s main argument is just a distraction by way of extremely dubious strawman.

The English stole all of our land and persecuted the Irish and caused a genocide during the potato famine by shipping food out of the country and not allowing Irish people to fish. – Must prove that you are a direct descendant of a slave
– Renounce and lose your US citizenship (never to be able to get it back)
– Removed from the USA and any of it's territories
– Can never return to the USA or any of it's territories (no matter the reason)
– Be permanently put on the No Fly List.
– These condition must apply to all of your children and their descendances.
My ancestors fought and some died to free slaves in the Civil War. I will expect reparations above what they receive because my ancestors never owned slaves but died to free their ancestors.
I have several relatives who were slaves of 'First Nations' Tribes and also many were indentured servants which is a nice way to say slave. All were Caucasians, they weren't white.

Whites, were enslaved by brown people in greater numbers than blacks were kept as slaves by white people during the Atlantic slave trade. The whites were treated much, much, much worse than blacks were as slaves. Very often it started with a naked trek across the Sahara desert or other festival activity, which the slaver hosts made sure to supply suntan lotion and extra water. I can't imagine living much longer than a week and dying in agony from my skin peeling from the sunburn.
Disease kept White people out of Africa because we didn't have inherited immunity to many of the Sub Saharan diseases. Living there 10 years pretty much wiped out white who attempted it. That means the slaves take from there were all taken by brown Africans. Not whites. Couldn't have happened. These were small numbers they sold to whites, they sold many more for domestic use and to other brown people.
If a black had a choice of being sent to America or divided into the intracontinental slave trade, in a heart beat the answer would be to jump in the slave boat and cross the Atlantic. Blacks took a vast number of slaves in the intracontinental trade, but only 25 million slaves survived the initial month. Males were especially in danger, because they were brutally castrated and then made to commence the long march. Only 10% survived the death marches, the other 90% died. So somewhere around 200 million blacks were killed by Arabs and other animist blacks travelling to their first enslavement destination. Who knows how many in the 25 million died because of the further harsh treatment?

Welfare, housing projects, rental assistance, AFDIC, food stamps, WIC, medicaid, etc.were opportunities to give a hand up to people who were left behind due to discrimination. We had the civil rights movement, schools were immigrated, pell grants, anti-discrimination laws and any one wishing to get out of poverty had opportunity to do so if they did not beome pregnant without marriage and before they learned some type of skill to become independent. I applied for a position as a firefighter after high school, about 1977, and was told that they have three positions open, there were about 100 applicants, and that even if I got the highest score of all those applicants I'd not stand a chance at getting hired because I wasn't black. Who did we conquer in the Civil War (to end slavery)? The confederates, the plantation owners and their government (Robert E. Lee. etal.). We should have made them slaves and taken away their property, BACK THEN, at that time (but they weren't thinking like that). And they could have even let some blacks own some of them as slaves, or make servants of them (except abolishing slavery was for all, so it wouldn't have sat so well).
But now that is all water under the bridge. How do you bring justice to people (slaves) injured by the cruel people who held them under inhumane conditions? No one is alive today who were the principals at that time, so how can you punish those who are alive today, for the sins of the past?

Regardless of one's personal opinion on the subject, Section 4 of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution considers emancipation payments by the United States or any State for slavery to be illegal and void.

The only people that have a legal right to reparations are the descendants of the slave owners whose property was illegally taken from them. Slavery was not illegal before or during the War of Northern Aggression. Many a Southern family lost millions of dollars worth of property in the form of "Slaves" as a result of the unconstitutional War waged by the North against their fellow Americans. Regardless of whether or not slavery was a moral institution, the fact is, it was not illegal. The slave owners should have been compensated for the illegal seizure of property they legally owned.

The Jim Crow Laws of the Democrats stopped the rapid economic/political rise of former slaves following the Civil War. This was the most rapid rise of any formerly enslaved people group in world history. The 60 plus years of set back under segragation and the intentional destruction of Black American families can be laid at the feet of the Democrat Party and its supporters.

If the left insists that institutional guilt passes down through legacy organizations, then every registered Democrat should be levied a mandatory surcharge to fund these payouts. REPARATIONS here in our USA — particularly CLASS REPARATIONS, which is what is discussed in this article and in many other similar instances — are ABSOLUTE NONSENSE.
This is because of basic reasons, that is, reasons aligned with American Fundamental Principles as established by our Founders those 250 years ago.
In our DEFINED American Way of Life, it is the INDIVIDUAL alone who is responsible for his/her actions, his/her crimes, etc.
It is that individual alone — the one who has been convicted in a court of law — who is to be held accountable.
It is NEITHER that person's relatives NOR descendants, NOR members of that person's ethnic group, NOR any cohort by which that person can be connected, etc., who are the guilty party.
This is the fundamental reason why We the People — according to our American Fundamental Principles — must insist on a total system of GOVT where we have LAWS OF, BY, and FOR the people, where those indicted for breaking such laws must be tried in a court of law and, IF found guilty, convicted and made to be held accountable. And note: this legal process must be conducted promptly; not generations after a criminal event.
Doing otherwise is certainly ANTI-American and should therefore be UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
Specifically, we, CITIZENS of today, cannot be held to account for the sins of our mothers, our fathers, or whomever from way back when … or whenever.

I'm 82. The issue of reparations is personal for me.
My great grandparents immigrated from Ireland and Germany in the 1850s. My mother's side were farmers who settled in Tennessee, later moved on to Missouri. My father's side were illiterate peasants who found low-skill work in Philadelphia and later in Scranton, Pa. My grandfather ended up in Missouri as a railroad laborer.
None ever owned slaves – among the many other things they never owned. In fact my immigrant relatives on my father's side were treated like slaves. Jobs? "Irish need not apply."
Why am I not owed reparations too? Color of my skin? The racist world that leftists are trying to build?
