Take a Xanax! How “Karen” Culture Escalates & What the Prescription Numbers Reveal

We’ve all seen them. Most tend to be middle-aged women and, generally, are identified by their rather aggressive behavior usually involving yelling and screaming. These women are condescendingly referred to as “Karens.” But is it funny? Seriously, is it funny? AbleChild would argue that it is more than likely that these women just aren’t randomly angry or naturally aggressive, but, rather, something much more personal is going on?
Based on the data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) one seriously must ask if it’s entirely possible that these women- these “Karens” – don’t even know why their behavior has become in-your-face-scary-aggressive. AbleChild suggests that this unnaturally aggressive behavior is born in a psychiatric diagnosis and a mind-altering drug “treatment.”
In fact, it seems odd, that given it has become so common to refer to aggressive women as “Karen” that the American Psychiatric Association (APA) hasn’t added being a “Karen” to its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) with all the alleged symptoms, even making these symptoms a “spectrum” of behaviors that can be “treated.” It’s easy to visualize the defense… “Yes, I’m on the Karen Spectrum.”
But let’s be honest, it’s no secret that America has become the psychiatric drug experimental playground for the psycho/pharma industry and according to the most recent data available, women are being drugged at record numbers. As of 2020, the CDC reports that more than twenty-one percent of women in the US took at least one psychiatric drug for a mental health disorder, with antidepressants, anxiety meds and sleep pills at the top of the list of prescribed drugs.
One in five American women, especially middle-aged and older, 40-59 years of age, are twice as likely as men to take antidepressants and the rate gets worse over 60 with the data showing one in four 60 and over women are taking at least one antidepressant.
What’s more interesting is that the psycho/pharma industry is cashing in on the increased diagnosing. Good RX data in 2024, for example, showed women spent 50% more out of pocket on mental health medications than men totaling nearly $2 billion additional spending per year. Good RX research further reveals that among the 45-64 age group, women spent 99% more than men on the mental health prescriptions and it skyrocket to 117% in women 65 and older.
In fact, Good RX reports that “women consistently outspent men on treatment for depression and anxiety across all age groups and in 2024, women spent a staggering $5.4 billion out of pocket on treatment for mental conditions, compared to $3.6 billion spent by men – nearly a $2 billion gap. So why are so many women being diagnosed and drugged?
Obviously, there are numerous reasons for such outrageous increases in women on psychiatric drugs, including that women have unique health care issues and are more willing than men to seek professional medical care. Women, too, are more likely to be caregivers, face economic hardship and experience trauma.
So, what should women expect, for example, as side effects associated with antidepressants? According to Drugs.com the possible side effects associated with sertraline (Zoloft) are top of the list aggressive reaction, mood and behavior changes, agitation, anxiety or nervousness, insomnia, emotional lability, mania, paranoia, suicidal ideation, abnormal thinking, hallucination, and irritability. Certainly, sounds like this drug could be responsible for causing a very cranky woman.
Antianxiety drugs also are responsible for serious side effects. Drugs.com reports that the benzodiazepine alprazolam (Xanax), for example, is a treatment for anxiety and possible side effects include hallucinations, risk-taking behavior, increased energy, agitation, talkative, racing thoughts, mood and mental changes, irritability, disinhibition, altered mood, hallucinations, abuse, aggressive or hostile behavior, depersonalization, rage, and suicidal ideation to name a few.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that these drugs can cause women to become aggressive. And, given that women are becoming the most drugged group in the US, isn’t it possible that the “Karen” moniker may actually be a side effect of psychiatric “treatments?”
Taken singularly the drug could be responsible for the aggressive behavior that is seen in too many women today. But imagine if these same women are on a cocktail of these drugs and it’s easy to see how out of control one may become. Is it really too much to make the connection between the possible side effects of the drugs now heavily prescribed to women and this new rage-based behavior?
Further, it is of interest that women are prescribed these mind-altering drugs for longer periods of time, making the drug dependency chronic and continuous. Additionally, there is no doubt that prescribing physicians are not advising women that aggressive behavior is a serious side effect associated with the psychiatric drugs.
Women represent the majority of patients with psychiatric diagnoses and are also the largest users of psychiatric mind-altering drugs, especially antidepressants. And women also are more likely to take a cocktail of drugs, clearly, based on the above possible side effects, making them susceptible to adverse drug reactions.
Maybe, just maybe, it’s time to stop making women the butt of the “Karen” joke and understand that women probably have no idea that the drugs prescribed as “treatment” are responsible for much of the unnatural and aggressive behavior that now seems to permeate certain drugged age groups.
It seems quite possible that middle aged women have literally been drugged out of their minds. It isn’t funny and these “Karens” probably have no idea why their behavior has become so aggressive.

My niece is a "Karen". She don't even know it. Her father does. He won't tell her. I don't blame him. All that yelling and screaming will be directed at him, and he knows that.

Definitely we have a drug addicted society and this is one area of some possibilities in some cases (for sure!) & drugs may more likely aggravate and then exagarate the mild "Karen" into the random loud Karen.

I'm with you. The truth is always better. When I went to the VA to see if I could get healthcare, the woman who was taking my information was asking me questions about how much I spent in copays, OTC meds and how much gas I used getting to my appointments. She was throwing out numbers like 2-3,000 dollars with a wink and I wouldn't bite. I told her that I went to the doctor maybe twice a year. The totality of what I spent on all of that was maybe 200 bucks. My father told me that I should just say what everyone says to get healthcare, but it just felt wrong to me, and hypocritical as I'm always bitching about people getting government benefits due to fraud. I was denied VA benefits by the way.

Not buying it. Even when I give a urine sample for my annual physical, the temperature of the urine is measured. How does one get around the temp measurement if one is 'buying' synthetic urine?
Simple. You microwave it. The artificial urine comes with a strip thermometer. Once the sample gets to body temperature you wrap it up in something, shove it in your pants and go pour it into a cup.

I don't really get people who take them regularly. I've taken xanax exactly twice, both times under physician care, in a hospital. Not my favorite but when you need stitches or an IV and have a needle phobia….yeah it helps. The funny thing is they bring you the xanax and a simple painkiller and then they try to trick you that the simple painkiller is the xanax and the xanax is the painkiller. Because obviously no adult outside a hospital can recognize ibuprofen.
They work great as a low grade muscle relaxer.
They have dual use.

You might want to do a little more research on Benzos. They do more than work, they destroy your brain and are often more difficult to come off of than heroine.
There are only two substances that have the ability to take you out if you quit cold turkey…alcohol and heroine.
There are MANY that make you feel like you are being taken out, and can cause a stroke or heart attack while you are hurling or something.
But that's not a direct causation even if the end result is being taken out all the same.
Every jail in the US has signs in the intake area about letting someone know if you're addicted to alcohol or heroine.
Both have treatments but they need to know immediately and at least in Maricopa county you won't face any probation/parole problems.
But if you are on probation/parole and don't say anything and they have to lock everyone down to save you later on, you'll face additional charges for using substances that you agreed to not use in order to be on probation/parole.
Anyways, those substances might feel harder to come off of, but they won't take you out, not directly.

Well You’re wrong. Like I said, do more research. People have massive seizures which can lead to death if they go cold turkey. Also, suicide is a big risk because of the disassociation that can occur. Also heroine withdraw symptoms don’t last for years like Benzos. Look up BIND. It’s actual brain damage.
Celebrex (celecoxib) is a COX-2 inhibitor (NSAID) and is not psychotropic. I think you're thinking of Celexa (citalopram) which is an SSRI.

Ever had a real full blown honest panic attack, male/female? They are extremely difficult, without warning? In the middle of a business meeting, you leave the room gasping for breath. I took when they would cycle in about once a decade & last a month or so. Completely stopped when they did. Never had an addiction to Xanax.
3 years ago my wife of 4 decades died with the horrible ALS. I have dealt with (3 to 4) panic attacks daily since. They are like a guy 3 times your weight holding you on a pool floor. Xanax – via chewing them then swallowing stop them in 5 to 10 minutes, .5mg. I hope they leave tonight forever. I have bought 2 oxygen compressors to use in shower and sleep. They help but not much. To me it’s a miracle drug when used appropriately and I could happily quit tomorrow. I wouldn’t be alive without them.
I’m 79, normal male, no known side effects for me other than making it easier to sleep. 100% doctor overseen. Only others I take are, vitamins, minerals.

Never ever ever take Benzodiazipines, like Xanax or Lorazepam. The hell that people go through trying to taper off these drugs is way worse than the side effects noted about the drug. It literally takes a slow taper of months to a year to get off of them and the hell you go through is insane as the withdrawl symptoms can last for years. They literally change the physical nature of the receptors in your brain causing brain damage that takes a long time for your brain to repair. Benzos withdraw symptoms are often times worse than heroine and last a lot longer. Many people end up with seizures when they try to come off of it too fast and develop BIND, which is a debilitating neurological dysfunction. Seriously, stay away from them and if you are currently taking them, try to get off but do it very very slowly. Look up how to taper off Benzos.
I took lorazepam intermittently for sleep. It works great, but no one should use it more than 30 days, and usually I had a small scrip (only a few pills) to help me over the sleepless humps.
That was years ago – in the 90s. My current docs wouldn't even prescribe it now – when I was in a sleepless hump a few months ago – so I am surprised any doc would prescribe it for continuous use.
Better off with Ambien for sleep. You can also try supplements like glycine and Gaba. Those both work well and I’ve been using it to help with insomnia while tapering off of my lorazepam. I was on it for over a decade for severe tinnitus.

I've used ambien, but I think I slept walked with it, so I quit using it (also, it should not be used for more than 30 days, although it may not be that addictive).
I eat tangerines. Once when I left my house in the early a.m. the road right in front of my house had tangerine peels from one tangerine in a small pile (it was in winter with snow – no less). I suppose rabbits could have done that, but I didn't see rabbit foot prints (or human – but tire tracks could have covered them). Then I would wake up in the morning and see food eaten, like one bite out of an apple and some other stuff. Since I had stairs, I decided it was too dangerous even if a rabbit was behind the tangerine peels in the road.
I’ve heard of people doing that, but I’ve never encountered anything like that during sleep. I also try not to take Ambien for more than 1 or 2 nights in a row as there can be a rebound effect when you don’t take it. But if I get really bad where I have to have 1 or 2 nights of sleep, I will use it. Try the Glycine, it’s worked very well for me. As far as my tinnitus, University of Oregon’s hearing dept ran tests and said my tinnitus matched to a 14k+ frequency at over 90 decibels. It’s pitch is at the very top edge of hearing range and loud enough that at times it causes physical pain for my head. I tried everything. Nothing worked until I used the lorazepam. It probably saved my life because I would have most likely chosen to eat a bullet. However, Lorazepam is the devil, especially after a decade of being on it. It causes early onset of dementia and alzhiemers. For me, I developed near vertigo levels of dizziness, loss of balance, cognitive decline, massive brain fog etc about 5 years ago. Made life a living hell. Now I’m in a long taper withdraw process to get off the Lorazepam. The withdraw side effects are just as evil. Gonna take me a year or so to fully get off of it with any chance of recovery.

There aren't any physical medical tests, scans, x-rays etc that can substantiate a person has a mental illness, emotional or behavioral. Not ever! The psychiatrists make the subjective diagnoses by asking the subject questions. Then they prescribe mind altering drugs with a dozen bad side effects then most likely prescribes other drugs for the side effects. And when something bad happens as a result they are never held responsible.

They collect the data and report on adverse events but these events are never labelled as such so reports are rather useless, at least the ones consumers are allowed to see. When the patient does Jekyll and Hyde consumers assume it is the depressive disorder and not the medication.

I never took those meds. I did take sleeping pills part time when I needed them and they really made me spacey…so I quit. My sister in law was on anti depressants for a long time. I'm daily becoming more and more convinced that these problems are the inevitable result of unresolved guilt people carry. Every honest human knows consciously and sub-consciously that they've fallen short, messed up, and deserve His punishment for those wrongs.
