Kennedy’s Summit Flips the Script: Congress Demanded Apology, Now Faces Calls for SSRI Hearings on Violence
In light of the recent mental health summit in which the Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, announced initiatives to reduce overprescribing of psychiatric drugs, AbleChild couldn’t resist a second look at the 2025 letter to the HHS Secretary from 26 Members of Congress “demanding” Kennedy rescind several statements about mental health.
Specifically, the Congressional Press Release suggests Kennedy’s statements “stigmatize mental health treatment” and “include misinformation such as falsely linking Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s) to school shootings…” The Release further explains that Kennedy’s “statements about certain mental health medications aren’t just unhelpful but dangerous.”
First, AbleChild would suggest that rather than apologize for making a connection between antidepressants and mass violence, the Secretary should immediately set up a commission to review the numerous instances of mass violence perpetrated by too many on psychiatric medications.
For instance, in 1989 Joseph Wesbecker shot twenty coworkers, killing eight of them before killing himself. Wesbecker had been on Prozac for a month prior to the shooting. Andrea Yates, a 36-year-old mother and registered nurse drowned her five children while on a cocktail of Haldol, Cogentin, Effexor and Wellbutrin. Then there is 16-year-old Jeff Weise from the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Red Lake, Minnesota, who shot his grandfather and girlfriend then killed 7 people at Red Lake High School before committing suicide. Weise had been on Prozac. And, finally, it is important to remember James Holmes, the Aurora Colorado theatre shooter who killed 12 and injured 70 while on Zoloft.
Of course, these are just a few of the numerous mass shootings that have occurred while the perpetrators were taking the very “medications” the Congressmen and women are so eager to protect. But it actually is more than that. AbleChild would suggest that these Members of Congress should consider what is known and not known about the psychiatric “medications” they so desperately want to protect.
For instance, the Members of Congress may find it interesting that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not have a clue how exactly any of the prescribed psychiatric drugs “work” as “treatment” for any psychiatric diagnosis.
Further, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) uses the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, which was created by literally voting by a show of hands for each of the diagnoses in the book. There is no science to support any abnormality in the brain that is any psychiatric diagnosis. Worse, the long reporter “chemical imbalance” was thoroughly debunked in 2022 by Dr. Joanna Moncrieff who made it clear in her peer-reviewed study that the “chemical imbalance, “specifically low serotonin, is a myth not supported by scientific evidence.”
Even the former head of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Thomas Insel, had the integrity to admit that he had spent 13 years at NIMH “really pushing on the neuroscience and genetics of mental disorders…and I don’t think we moved the needle in reducing suicide, reducing hospitalizations, improving recovery for the tens of millions of people who have mental illness.” Yes, Insel spent an admitted $20 billion that Congress appropriated and got nothing in return except, according to Insel “lots of really cool papers published by cool scientists at fairly large costs.”
Now let’s consider the nuts and bolts of the psychiatric drug “medications,” antidepressants, that Congress is so emotionally attached and how the HHS Secretary’s concerns about violence associated with the “treatments” is worthy of serious consideration.
Let’s review the possible side effects associated with Prozac, the first SSRI antidepressant. Anxiety, confusion, difficulty with concentration, mood or behavior changes, amnesia, hyperkinesia, sensory disturbances, depression, dyskinesia, memory impairment, abnormal dreams, agitation, emotional lability, hostility, hypomania, mania, personality disorder, thinking abnormal, depersonalization, paranoid reaction, aggression, suicidal thoughts, and behavior and suicide attempt to name a few.
In fact, all of the SSRI antidepressants carry similar possible adverse events and the FDA black box warning for suicidality. This is the most serious warning the FDA produces before pulling drugs from the market. Certainly, these lawmakers must be aware that with the increase in prescribing antidepressants comes an increase in suicides among the nation’s youth. And let’s not be confused about suicide as it is very much a violent act.
Certainly, these Members of Congress crying for apologies from the HHS Secretary for his concerns about violence being connected to psychiatric medications must acknowledge that the mental health crisis is getting worse. In fact, every year the number of Americans being diagnosed with a mental illness and prescribed mind-altering drugs as “treatment” is increasing. The fact that nobody is getting better is clear based on the yearly increase in psychiatric drug prescriptions.
And, at the end of the day, Congress must take some responsibility for the mental health crisis as it is the nation’s federal lawmakers who opened the mental health flood gates by enacting the 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which allows mental illness to be covered at parity with medical and surgical care. It, apparently, never occurred to Congress that there is no way to diagnose a mental abnormality like a doctor would diagnose cancer. You know X-rays, CAT scans, urine tests, etc. There also is no measurable brain abnormality that is any psychiatric diagnosis, making mental health diagnosing grossly open to fraud. Is it any wonder, also, that mental health conditions account for roughly 60% of all Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients under the age of 65.
AbleChild would remind these Members of Congress that a Massachusetts mother, Lindsay Clancy, awaits trial for the murder of her three children. Lindsay, suffering from postpartum depression, was prescribed 13 mind-altering drugs (several of which were antidepressants) by two psychiatrists in a three-month period.
AbleChild wonders whether these 26 Members of Congress question a link between psychiatric drugs and violence in this case. Lindsay was happily married, a registered nurse and, by all accounts, a loving mother. Lindsay never had a violent moment in her life until she was prescribed these drugs.
Secretary Kennedy is right to question if there is a connection between violence and psychiatric drugs.

Oh yes they do, I work for a clinic that treats "professionals" for addictions. A good percentage of them are in psychiatry. Most are nurses, but therapists, NPs, psychiatrists are about 25% of them.
Most are true believers in the drug 'em up and see what happens treatment plans.
I want to see a study on how many "trans" people are taking SSRIs or other medications that mimick the effects of SSRIs in the human brain.
I would bet 100%. I don't think it's just taking them, it's when they suddenly stop because they think they don't need them anymore or can't afford it. Teens go right off the deep end.
That is an excellent point. If you need to go off these meds you have to taper off, just like you would with prednisone.

Antidepressants of all kinds are suspicious. Some make people more depressed. Some make people suicidal. Some cause people to tip from depression into full psychosis. Others make people murderous. They are over-prescribed and under-monitored.
They are dangerous to the people around the person taking them because the effects can be drastic and unexpected. They should be banned except in rare cases and closely monitored in every case.
Read the fine print warning literature that's included with each prescription. Get a magnifying glass and a cup of coffee. It's illuminating.
The side effects are worse than the condition they are trying to fix.
For me, I've been taking anti-d's for years and it has helped. Never once thought of harming others or myself. I'd be very careful about just assuming that people taking anti-ds are somehow "dangerous" to others, as you lumping the hundreds of millions of people who take those meds and who do not have any problems of any kind; you are basically allowing the minority group that do have problems to speak for the majority.
I do, however, agree that as a society we rely far too much on medication. I feel that we should be relying on more natural methods of treating this stuff. Of course, I have the disadvantage of living in one of the most depressed cities in the US (Las Vegas, it is a city with the highest number of depression cases, highest number of anti-d subscriptions and the general consensus that I can find is that a lot of that has to do with the environment. The state with the lowest is Hawaii, much of which is because of their environment and the access they have to recreation – along with New Jersey.
With all of this said: I would like to get off the anti-ds at the most. There is a job I want to get into but I can't due to being on this medication and I can't try the natural stuff until I get off this stuff.

I realize that there are people who need these drugs. What I object to is that docs don’t monitor them more closely. As we age we don’t process them as well. Bodily functions work less efficiently so process less efficiently, leading to buildup and overdoses. Young people may have extreme reactions to them. Good luck with your job hunt.
Rx drugs aren’t human. They have no God given rights. There’s no innocent until proven guilty clause that protects them. If a person takes a drug and has any type of companion symptoms or reactions the drug should be considered guilty until proven innocent. One need not look far to find that politicians running to the defense of the Rx despite a legitimate question as to safety of any drug expose who they serve. Congress should always err on the side of caution. Not rush to their masters defense. They expose themselves. You need not look any deeper.

This is the exact truth. Anyone that thinks these persons on these drugs get angry and agitated to cause them to do what they do, they are not.. They are never moved from the perfect calm point produced from these drugs. They don't care and that not caring is what can make them act upon just a "why the hell not thought" so they just do it because they can. I'm saying what happens with these drugs is the person loses the capability to question their thoughts or impulses on the side of right or wrong, they are just as happy doing a crime as they are when they are doing nothing. They are not moved, they cannot reason any longer, they are in a fog of euphoria which is a false outcome from these drugs. Remember, they don't get angry and act on that anger. And getting off of them has withdrawal issues, on a pretty severe level. No one talks about that.

The best thing for Post Partum Depression is Krill Oil, 2-3 X day. Dose up to overcome the deficiency; be mindful of the gall bladder.

SSRI's have long been suspected to cause serious lapses in judgement. SSRI's have long been a concern in multiple homicides, and the person doesn't realize the gravity of what they've done, or in many cases they just don't care. I'm pretty sure it's much more common, than what's been reported.
Now I see ads for an add-on pill if your antidepressant doesn't make a depressed person quite happy enough. The answer is always more pills. Older people are taking them by the handfuls, but no one is warning about how these medications act differently in the elderly.
I'm older than dirt, take no prescription drugs and my go-to pain reliever is aspirin. I'm big pharmas worst nightmare. I will take an antibiotic when necessary which isn't often. I'm watching my contemporaries taking more and more pills and getting sicker and sicker. It's frightening.

My S-I-L told her doctor she couldn’t sleep. The doc prescribed Ambien. She tells me how great she sleeps now and tells me I should try it. (I sleep just fine, thank you very much). About six months into this “miracle sleep drug” she started falling at random. She broke her hip. She broke her wrist. She just flops around like a landed fish now. I suspect this drug has built up in her system and is affecting her balance during daytime hours now. I keep telling her to wean herself off it, but she “sleeps so good”. The doc never tests her for a drug buildup issue.
I don't know her age, but Ambien isn't likely a good choice. People have sleep-walked and driven somewhere and they have no idea. That is really a scary thought.
My understanding of those on Ambien that sleep walk, is they have mixed it with alcohol.
I've been on Ambien for over 30 years and it's helpful. I've had problems sleeping since I was a child.

Yours works probably because you are only judging it by one symptom, not able to sleep & not raising the dose for no apparent reason.
Raising the does is an excuse (not only for more $$$) but to ignore some other symptom that probably has nothing to do with "not being able to sleep".
Check your side effects, if you have any problems make sure it is not the drug that is causing the problems. Upping the does would make everything worse.
Just an example: Wellbutrin has a whole page of side effects & one (at the end of the page) is death!
She’s a bit older then me, well into what is considered the “senior” category. I don’t think she’s done anything too weird except the constant falling. There’s at least a twice a month episode with the falling.
Exactly, she must wean herself off it, because if you quit these drugs cold turkey, that's when the trouble starts.

BBeen ,trying the carnivore diet for a week now . I went from 4 to 6 hours of fiitfull sleep to 6 to 7 hours of restorative sleep . Cut my trips to the John in half . Been 3 straight nights now . Im off 25 years of ssri 3 years in August. What a F—– battle that was . Still waiting for that nightmare to end . Am hopeful the Carnivore diet will help. So far so good .. Although I am a neurologist, I don't know what Ambien is (we have different commercial names for most drugs). However, falls may be an early sign of Parkinson's disease and a few other conditions. Have your SIL checked by a neurologist.

Well, I remember years ago (years) before computers, the pharmacist kept a log book on doctors and their Rx’s and monthly gave to pharmaceutical companies. Ka-ching. Then the drug companies started giving boats, cars, vacations, etc to doctors. Now, with the computer, the doctors just prescribe to pharmacy and the ‘record’ goes to the drug company. BIG KA-CHING. Automatically.
And here I thought doctors prescribed so many prescriptions because it made their job easier. Hand a patient a pill and call if you don't feel better. Quick in and out.

Same story. Haven't been to Doctor but once in the last 20 years, when i had a bike wreck . I eat really good food and avoid junk and fast foods. My mom was my inspiration, and outside of allergy season, I'm a vitamins only consumer…I thank God every day, and trust Him more than I could ever trust modern medicine.

I literally laugh at the commercials anymore when they list the side effects, the anti depression drugs cause the same symptoms the drug is meant to correct with the added side effect of involuntary movements. So then you take another drug to treat the involuntary movements and it's side effects are involuntary movements, shaking, drooling, and inability to move (basically a seizure) along with depression and thoughts of suicide……the exact symptoms you were originally treating with the first drug.

Antipsychotics are also have horrific adverse effects. Not always of course, but they can cause the ultimate (but unintended) gaslighting: you get drugs that cause you to do something crazy, but doctors assume it's just crazy you who the drugs didn't help.

I hear cancer treatments fail in most of the cases they are used. In fact some think they accelerate the disease. Anyway more and more people are getting cancer so let's have hearings on that methodology.

Congress has never been know for its knowledge about human nature or biological needs of our human mind.
Congressmen cannot afford real opinions on any policy. It would interfere with their fundraising. Congress votes with the lobby checks.
Instead of looking at SSRI's being tied to school shoo*ings", maybe they should rather look at how many of these events were committed by people pumped full of hormones from the opposite s*x because nearly all of them (if not all) were committed by those called "trans"…
Just like our approach to everything we have a myopic view of the problem. One size does not fit all. I'd like to see real research into mental illness, it's causes both social and biological, research on successes and failures associated with different types of treatment including drugs. In other words the complete picture. Not wild speculation and finger pointing.
People, do not be so judgmental! I agree these drugs are way overprescribed. They are not meant for everyone. However, these drugs saved my life. If you’ve never walked in these shoes, you are not qualified to make such decisions. As for side effects, read the literature on Tylenol which is quite a dangerous drug. I’ve seen more than one death from it.
No difference in allowing people on these drugs to even drive when the side effects are worse than driving alcohol impaired. This goes back a long, long way. Remember the jokes about every housewife being on happy drugs even in the sixties?
