A New Hope, A False Hope, The Last Hope

Is a New Hope the Best Hope?
During times of trouble and tribulation people often look for a “Hope,” a “New Hope” to “save the day.” Somebody new, someone different, somebody exciting, somebody Christ Like who sacrifices themselves to save others. Somebody who put the needs of the others over the need of their self. Merriam-Webster defines HOPE (edited) as:
“…assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something. To cherish this with anticipation”
The use of a Christlike figure in movies is not new and in fact it has been used many times. Here are four simple examples:
- Tron: Ares (2025) – A digitized human program searches for the “Permeance Code” (Eternal Life) that will allow evil AI programs into our realm, breaks with his creator (programmer) and saves the world.
- “He’s biblically strong, lightning fast, and supremely intelligent.” Sounds like the characteristic of Christlike person.
- Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) – Luke Skywalker is the “New Hope” with his increasing command of the metaphysical power, “The Force.” battling the Empire oppressive
- “The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.” “That boy is our last hope.” The ability of this so called “force” to be inside and outside of all things, sounds an awful like the God
- The Matrix (1999)– Neo sacrifices himself to save humanity and is resurrected, directly mirroring Christ’s death and resurrection.
- “Unfortunately no one can tell you what the matrix is, you have to see it for yourself.”
- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)– Aslan, the lion, is an intentional allegory for Christ’s sacrificial death and resurrection.
- Edmund about the evil Queen: “All the things he said to himself to believe she was good, and kind, and her side was the right side, sounded silly now.”
Now you can see in stories, books, movies, etc., Humans love a story with a Christ-like figure. And just like Edmund in the Narnia movie, his problem, the problem in other stories, and the problem in life; is our ability to ascertain the difference between good and evil. Is this Messiah good or evil? The one we choose will greatly determine how our life goes. What is right and what is wrong is sometimes difficult to see.
2 Corinthians 11:12-15 (NIV) 12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.
Satan The Great Masquerader
Satan masquerades as an angel of light and fools many people in the process. And his followers masquerade as false apostles and deceitful workers of Christ. Those with the knowledge from the Bible, however, can “cut the ground” under those false apostles and workers to make know the hope that lives within us. That hope is Christ.
Colossians 1:27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
The Bible’s Hope
Hope in the Bible is built on faith.
Galatians 5:5 (ESV) For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.
Hope is the intense anticipation that comes with a confident expectation. It is a “knowing” that naturally stems from faith. It is a peaceful assurance that something that hasn’t happened yet, will indeed happen. It is not like the word is used today where 
people say “I hope I get a promotion”, “I hope I have a good day.” Hope in the Bible is a Guarantee, a “token.”
2 Thessalonians 1:4-5 (ASV) so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which ye endure; 5 which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God;
When I worked in New York City, they used to have tokens for the subway there. They were a little coins that had a hole in the middle (Sometime it was a “Y” from NYC, other times it was different) and you would use them to get into the subway. If you had a token, you would not be worried if you could get on the subway. If you had a ticket for a movie, you wouldn’t be worried if you could get in. You have the ticket, the guarantee of a seat for the movie you want to see. It’s the same with Hope for Christians, we have a TOKEN TO RIDE!
But having a ticket to a movie does not mean you have seen the movie. Hope must involve something that is as yet unseen:
Romans 8:24 “Hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?”
Titus 2:13 We can’t see Him yet, but we know He’s coming, and we anticipate that event with joy.
Your Token to Paradise
But just because we can’t see something doesn’t mean we don’t have a strong confidence that we will receive what we hope for and that’s what the Bible talks about, that this hope we have is the Real thing, it’s a real ticket to paradise, it’s the Hope that is within us, the Holy Spirit.
Hebrews 11:1-3 (NIV) 1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
According to Scripture, faith is the present assurance and conviction of unseen realities, trusting God’s character and Word right now, while hope is the joyful, patient expectation of future promises not yet seen, such as salvation and glory (Romans 8:24-25). Faith grounds belief in what God is and has done; hope directs confidence toward what He will do. Together, they are inseparable: faith gives substance to hope, and hope gives purpose to faith.
Jesus Christ is the First Hope, the Real Hope
You will notice in the title there is no mention of the “First Hope.” That’s the hope I want to talk about. The first hope that was given early on in the Bible
Genesis 3:15 (NIV) And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
The “First Hope” was that God promised that a savior, a messiah, would come and with that hope the people that believe in him will have eternal life.
What the first hope should do to us. What is the proof that it is inside us? It should change us to Love One Another, to have a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith that is a guarantee of eternity. Put your hope in God and praise our savior.
1 Timothy 1:5 (NIV) The goal of this command [instruction] is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
Psalms 42:5 (NIV) Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
So put your whole Hope in God, love one another, have a pure heart and good conscience and you will have that:
